    Attention all Brock ArcGIS users! It’s time for the Annual Esri Scholarship Competition. Eligible students (current students including undergraduate to graduate with B+ Major average) are invited to submit a ~500 word Esri GIS Project Proposal with their resume to sjanzen@brocku.ca by April 1st 4:30 p.m. A nominee will be announced by April 15th with project deliverables due by June 1st. The deliverables for the successful candidate will include a poster and report in the form of an Esri StoryMap. Prizes include $1,000 cash reward, software access, books, conference passes and more!

    Esri is the industry standard for Geographic Information Systems (GIS) across all sectors. GIS is used at Brock in Health Sciences, Biological Sciences, Environmental Sciences, History, Literature & Language, Political Science, Earth Sciences, Recreation and Leisure Studies and Geography/Tourism.

    Attention all Brock GIS users! It’s time for the annual Esri Scholarship Competition. Eligible students (current students from undergrad to grad) can submit a ~500 word ESRI GIS Project Proposal with their resume to sjanzen@brocku.ca by April 24th 4:30 p.m.

    Geographic Information Systems is mapping and analysis software. Esri is the industry standard for GIS across all sectors. GIS is used at Brock in Health Sciences, Biological Sciences, Environmental Sciences, History, Literature & Language, Political Science, Earth Sciences, Recreation and Leisure Studies and Geography/Tourism.

    GIS Day events return in-person this year after a two-year hiatus. In addition to quizzes, learning and laughter, a key part of the annual tradition at Brock is a GIS Day cake.

    Submit one of your map creations (in JPEG format) to Sharon Janzen, Map Library Associate and Geospatial Data Coordinator, for a chance to have it featured on this year’s cake.

    The Map, Data & GIS Library (MDGL) is pleased to welcome students and faculty back to campus for the 2022/2023 year! The MDGL provides users with excellent resources and services on campus at MacKenzie Chown C306 including:

    • Scanning, printing, and study space
    • Thousands of maps, and books from atlases to watershed plans.

    Online, the MDGL is home to the Niagara Air Photo Index, digital and historical map collections, and special exhibits such as StoryMaps at Brock University, Historic Welland Canals Mapping Project, and more. Come explore Niagara and the world from times long past to future possibilities!

  • ESRI Canada GIS Scholarship Contest, 2022

    The Esri Canada GIS Scholarship Award program provides software, books, training, funding and other benefits to undergraduate and graduate students at universities across Canada who can demonstrate competent use of Esri’s geospatial technologies.

    Brock University has been privileged to take part in the Scholarship Award program for the last 9 years. This year, the 2022 Esri Scholarship Competition will be held virtually with a deadline for applicants set for April 1st. The winner will receive a cash prize of $1,000 plus additional books, software, and learning opportunities.

    The successful applicant will be required to complete a poster and an ArcGIS StoryMap by June 1, 2022 outlining how they used ESRI’s suite of products to enhance or conduct their research. Projects may include personal research, academic projects or even course assignments.

    Brock’s 2021 recipient was Jessica Linzel who “Reimagines Historical Topics with GIS”.

    The Esri Canada GIS Scholarship Award competition is now on at colleges and universities across the country.  The award includes software, books, training, funding and other benefits to undergraduate and graduate students who can demonstrate competent use of Esri’s geospatial technologies.

    Brock University has been privileged to take part in the Scholarship Award program for the last 8 years. For 2021, the competition will be held virtually with a deadline for applicants set for April 1st. A cash prize of $1000 is in addition to the prizes noted above.

  • GIS Week is November 16-20

    Celebrating Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Day looks a little different this year. Universities across Ontario and Québec have joined forces to present workshops, and lectures, open to all, online.

    Events include: the Geography of Pokémon Go, QGIS, the mapping of conservation, of history and of COVID-19, as well as networking events and a trivia night.

    Organizers note that technical experience is not required. “Maps and mapping technology are more accessible now than ever before [and] no prior GIS experience [is] required.”

    The Brock University Map, Data & GIS Library will present a hands-on workshop as part of the week’s events.

  • The Map, Data & GIS Library is celebrating and you should too!

    ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online resources are now available to the Brock University community through an enterprise login and Brock credentials. Just a few steps and you can have a world of mapping capabilities at your fingertips.

    Prior to this new method, students, staff and faculty were required to contact staff of the MDGL to obtain access.  Staff always responded to each request as quickly as possible but it was certainly not instant.  These Esri products are not free tools, however this is just one of the many resources that the Brock University Library provides access to for its users. We hope everyone takes the opportunity to explore the world of GIS and all of its many possibilities!

  • NEW ArcGIS Pro Workshop

    ArcGIS Pro Workshop

    Interested in learning ArcGIS Pro by really digging into the software and using realistic data? This workshop, offered in partnership by the Map, Data and GIS Library and the Digital Scholarship Lab, will use a fictitious scenario about a flu outbreak in St. Catharines.  In this workshop we will geolocate each incident of the flu and determine what schools should be shut down based on their proximity to flu incidents. We will also use network analysis to calculate the nearest medical centres.  In attending this workshop, you will learn the basics of creating a visually pleasing layout and how to share your work with others.  This event is open to everyone, no previous ArcGIS experience is necessary.
