  • New Scholars Portal Books Platform Now Live

    Scholars Portal is pleased to announce the full release of the brand new Scholars Portal Books platform.

    Highlights of the new platform include:

    • Significantly improved browsing and searching
    • PDF chapter downloads if copyright allows
    • Ability to choose only Brock University subscribed titles

    Scholars Portal Books provides access to a wide range of scholarly digital texts on a single platform. Most of our content is from academic publishers, and is available to Ontario universities that have purchased ebooks with perpetual access rights. Some collections on the platform are available to universities across Canada, some are available to Ontario colleges, and some are open access or public domain and available to all.

  • Publish, Don’t Perish: Tips for Evaluating Journals

    So, you want to make sure you publish your research in a “good” journal? Join Scholarly Communication Librarian Elizabeth Yates and Library employees for a presentation highlighting strategies for evaluating the quality and relevance of academic journals. Participants will hear suggestions for maximizing the reach of their research via open access publishing and will learn tips for avoiding predatory publications.

  • Library Open Access Publishing Fund open for applications

    The Library Open Access Publishing Fund, an educational opportunity designed to encourage interest in open access publishing, is now accepting applications for 2018-19.

    The fund assists Brock University faculty, librarians, staff, and students in paying article processing charges levied by some open access publishers. Grants will be awarded up to a maximum of $1,500 CDN.

    Please carefully review the fund’s Terms and Conditions before applying.

  • New Resource: The John Johnson Collection

    New Resource: The John Johnson Collection

    Dive into a rich collection of documents that illustrate everyday life in Britain during the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries.  Over a period of several decades, John de Monins Johnson, Printer to the University of Oxford, collected and preserved a wealth of documents that were transferred to the Bodleian Library in 1968.  His collection included:

    • posters & handbills for theatrical and nontheatrical entertainment
    • broadsides relating to murders & executions
    • book & journal prospectuses
    • Popular topographical prints
    • A wealth of advertising materials

    From this collection, nearly 70,000 documents have been digitized, providing researchers with insight into the culture and interests of Great Britain over a period of two centuries.

  • Introducing Digital Theatre Plus

    Dim the lights and enjoy a live theatre experience! The Brock Library is excited to provide access to Digital Theatre Plus, a resource that provides streaming access to over 300 live theatre productions from companies such as The Old Vic and The Royal Shakespeare Company, with new content added each month.

    In addition to productions, Digital Theatre Plus includes the following:

    • Study Guides written by practicing actors and theatre faculty (e.g. A Midsummer Night’s Dream)
    • Documentaries such as the BBC Shakespeare Uncovered – David Tennant on Hamlet and Christopher Plummer King Lear
    • Audio recordings from LA Theatre Work
    • Interviews with costume and set designers, directors, and actors

  • New Resource: Drama Online

    Drama Online is a collection of more than 1,300 plays from Methuen Drama, Faber and Faber, as well as the Arden Shakespeare. Features of the Core Collection to which Brock subscribes include:

    • The ability to find a play or monologue based on the # of roles, setting, playwright, etc. (great for planning a production or choosing a monologue for an audition)
    • Images from the Victoria and Albert Museum Performance Archive
    • Play tools that visually indicate how many lines and in what scenes each character appear
