On Display: Voyage of Discovery: French, Italian, German, and Hispanic & Latin American Cultures

The Department of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures has mounted a display in the Learning Commons and Thistle hallway showcasing various aspects of French, Italian, German, and Hispanic and Latin American Cultures.

Viewers are encouraged to choose an image or artifact from the exhibit which they find intriguing or beautiful, and share why in a submission to dbielicki@brocku.ca. Prizes will be awarded for winning submissions (pick-up in MCA-240).

The MLLC display runs from September 24 to October 5, 2018. Submission deadline: October 5, 2018.

On Display: The World Remembers

For 12 hours each day for 61 days, the names of those killed in the First World War will scroll across video screens in Niagara and around the world. Sadly, it will take from now until Remembrance Day to recognize the more than one million men and women killed on both sides of the conflict.

On Display: Celebrating First Generation Students

First Generation students (Trailblazers) are being celebrated at Brock University this week. As over 25% of our student population is first in their family to attend post-secondary, they are changing the course of their own lives and also the lives of generations to follow.

In honour of these students, a new display in the Library and Learning Commons features the profiles of famous “First Gens.” From Shaquille O’Neal and Michelle Obama to Roberta Jamieson and Mahatma Gandhi, there is a Trailblazer story to inspire you.

On Display: Artifacts of Meaning: a display of First Nations, Métis and Inuit handiwork

On your next trip to the Library and Learning Commons, spare some time to view the current display of artifacts by First Nations, Métis and Inuit craftspeople. Learn the importance of sage, sweet grass, cedar and tobacco to indigenous cultures. View intricate bead work, sewing, weaving and more.

The display, curated by Arlene Bannister of Aboriginal Student Services runs until December 15^th.

On Display: 3D Printed Artifacts for Classics 2p32

The Department of Classics and The Library Makerspace recently collaborated on an experiential learning project and all are invited to view the results. Replicas of Alexander the Great, the Pharaoh Hetshepsut, and the Venus of Willendorf are on display this week at the Thistle entrance to the Library.

The works came about as a result of Carrie Murray, Tabitha Lewis, and Jonathan Younker’s work to create a project that would bring technology into the classroom. Students in CLAS 2P32 – Introduction to Archaeology, researched and wrote proposals to choose artifacts held in major museums for 3D printing. The chosen artifacts were printed in class this week.

Following the exhibit, the artifacts will be moved to a display case in the Cypriote Museum, Department of Classics, and they will be used in upcoming courses.

On Display: Inuit Carvings from the Pelino Collection

The Brock Library is hosting an exhibit of exquisite Inuit sculpture on loan from the private collection of Brock alumnus Joe Pelino (BSc ’91). Learn more about Pelino, his collection and his connection to Iqlauit in the Brock News.
