Requesting Films For Classes

The Library offers several options for finding and using films in your classes.

Streaming Videos

1. Best Bet: Search Omni.

Omni allows you to search across all our subscription video databases* at once.

Navigate to the Omni advanced search page, search by title or keyword etc. and toggle the ‘resource type’ to video/film:

The Omni advanced search screen with resource type 'Video/Film' selected

The Omni advanced search screen is shown with resource type ‘Video/Film’ selected

* Included in Omni are these subscribed streaming video collections:

  • AudioCine
  • Criterion on Demand
  • Kanopy
  • PBS Video Collection
  • Digital Theatre Plus

DVDs and Physical Media

DVDs in the Library’s collection (found in Omni) can be

  • placed on short-term loan for classes,
  • booked in advance for viewing in class, or
  • digitized by library staff for inclusion in Brightspace (under certain circumstances, see below)

How this works

  1. Search for the item in Omni and fill out the ‘Add to Reserve’ form.
  2. If you cannot find the item in Omni, submit a general Course Reading List Request and our Reserve team will look into options for reserving the film for your class.
  3. Please indicate if you would like the film to be:
    • On Short-term loan for students to borrow,
    • On hold for classroom viewing on a particular date,
    • Or both above.

Requesting digitization of a DVD from the Library’s collection

  • We will only digitize library-owned copies that are not available on library streaming video platforms or commercial streaming services accessible to the Canadian market (Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc.).
  • Please note that we require at least two weeks’ notice to allow time for the digitization process.
  • To comply with copyright fair dealing requirements,
    • The film must be required viewing for the course, and not supplemental/optional viewing.
    • The digitized film will include a disclaimer to inform students that they are prohibited from further distributing or making reproductions.
    • Access to the digitized film will be strictly restricted to students currently enrolled in the course.
    • Access will be removed at the end of the term.

Instructor copies of physical media (DVDs/Blu-ray discs)

  • We can put legally obtained instructor owned copies of physical media (DVDs/Blu-ray discs) on short term loan at the library.
  • We are not able to digitize instructor copies.

A note on commercial streaming video services

The library is unable to support instructors as it relates to films on commercial video streaming platforms like Netflix, Apple+, Amazon Prime, etc. If instructors are considering using these services for their classes, they should note any license restrictions associated with the platform, as most only allow personal use. You can encourage students to use their own accounts to view films if they have them.
