Undergraduate Library Research Award

Information literacy is a set of abilities requiring individuals to recognize when information is needed and to have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information. (ACRL, 2000). The ability to conceptualize information seeking as an intellectual process and not simply a mechanical exercise is the basis for this award.

In establishing an undergraduate library research award, the Library wants to reward and celebrate the academic information literacy achievement of Brock students. This award takes the form of an essay contest.  Students are asked to write a 500 word essay describing Library resources and services they used and what they learned from using them while they were engaged in the writing of a paper for a Brock course.

A $500 prize will be given to the undergraduate student who writes the best essay. Results will be announced in the Brock News and posted on the Library's web site.  The winner will be chosen based on the selection criteria of sources and services used, a description of the searching process, and a statement of what was learned.

Eligibility and Application Procedure
Any undergraduate student currently enrolled in either a half or full course at Brock University may submit an essay.  The library essay must be accompanied by a paper written for a Brock course.  The paper must have been written within the current academic year (Fall 2011-Winter 2012).  The paper must make use of secondary literature to support an argument, and it must contain a bibliography.  Only the essay will be judged for the prize.  Essays and accompanying papers may be submitted online here.

Submissions will be accepted until April 16, 2012 at 4:30 p.m.  Incomplete or late applications will not be accepted. Announcement of the award will be made by May 1, 2012.
