He is also the recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Gold Jubilee Medal, awarded to Canadians who have made outstanding and exemplary contributions to their communities.

In his administrative roles, he worked tirelessly to help foster Brock University's reputation as a quality academic institution where priority is placed on the teaching of students.

The Learning Commons was created to enrich the student learning experience by offering an environment that fosters informal learning and promotes student engagement. Bill Matheson believed deeply in the importance of higher education and the  quality of the learning experience.

With the generous support of Arthur Peltomaa (BA econ/pol '74) and other friends and former students, the Matheson Learning Commons was named in recognition of Bill Matheson's significant contribution to the growth and success of Brock University.
