  • In 2017, Triggs Lecture Series hits a milestone and goes global

    The Triggs International Premium Vinifera Lecture Series marks its landmark 10th instalment this year by featuring a European expert who will explore crop development practices relevant to many North American grape growers. Organized by Brock’s Cool Climate Oenology and Viticulture Institute (CCOVI), this year’s lecture and vineyard tours take place August 3 and 4 at Brock and four vineyard sites in Ontario’s Niagara region.   • July 25: Master of Science thesis defence

    Anshul Sidhu, a candidate in the Centre for Biotechnology, will present his Master of Science thesis defence on Tuesday, July 25 at 1 p.m. in Mackenzie Chown H-Block 313.

    His thesis is titled, Understand the diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella) performance in plant alternative cropping systems.

    His examination committee members are Dr. Rich Cheel, Chair; Dr. Wendy McFadden Smith (OMAFRA), External Examiner; Dr. Liette Vasseur, Supervisor; Dr. Travis Dudding and Dr. Fiona Hunter, Committee Members.

  • July 17: Master of Science thesis defence

    Darrell Agbulos, a candidate in Brock’s Centre for Biotechnology, will present his thesis defence by video conference on Monday, July 17 at 1 p.m. in Mackenzie Chown H-Block 313.

    His thesis is titled, Investigating Flavivirus Infection, Dissemination, and Transmission Dynamics Using Zika virus, West Nile virus, and their Mosquito Vectors.

    His examination committee members are Michael Bidochka, Chair; Dr. William Reisen (Centre for Vectorborne Diseases), External Examiner; Dr. Fiona Hunter, Supervisor; Dr. Feng Li and Vincenzo De Luca, Committee Members.

  • Student initiative sending textbooks to Ghana

    Evans Boadi knows first-hand how difficult it can be to further your education when you don’t have access to the resources you need. The Brock Mathematics and Statistics master’s student who began his post-secondary career at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in his home nation of Ghana had a vision; to offer a helping hands to students back home in gaining the best possible education available to them.   • Mosquito doc filmed at Brock gets its U.S. premiere on Thursday

    If you’re looking to capture hundreds of mosquitos on film, there’s no better place to turn than a university with Canada’s leading expert on the tiny creatures. When Yap Films started working on its new documentary Mosquito, which premieres Thursday night on the Discovery Channel in the U.S., it came to Brock to work with Professor Fiona Hunter and her team of researchers. After months of preparation, the production company built a temporary studio in a Mackenzie Chown lab and spent a week last October filming mosquitos using macro videography and high-speed cameras.   • Brock alum continues to recover after NYC shooting

    Associate Professor in Brock University’s Department of Chemistry, Travis Dudding, shares information about Justin Timperio, a Centre for Biotechnology grad (BSc ’10), who was severely injured in a shooting at a New York City hospital last week. According to Dudding, the Biotechnology grad left quite an impression on many people he encountered during his time at the University. Read the full story here

  • Ontario’s top winemaker award goes to a Brock alum named Shiraz

    One of Brock’s first graduates of the Oenology and Viticulture program was recognized for his winemaking prowess at this year’s Ontario Wine Awards. Shiraz Mottiar (BSc ’00) won the coveted 2017 Winemaker of the Year award at a ceremony held in May. The Ontario Wine Awards, considered by many as the Oscars of the winemaking industry, were founded 23 years ago by international wine consultant, judge and writer Tony Aspler, as a means to celebrate Ontario’s best VQA vintages. In winning this year’s award, Mottiar — who is the lead winemaker at Malivoire in Beamsville — is in good company. He is the third graduate of the OEVI program in Brock’s Cool Climate Oenology and Viticulture Institute (CCOVI) to take home the award. Read the full story here
