The Datathon is an educational conference that will provide students of any background with an opportunity to interact, network and learn about the increasingly important field of data analytics. Blending the experience and knowledge of our educators with hands-on learning, attendees will learn how big data is changing the world and how to think like a Data Scientist. Afterwards, you will be able to put this new knowledge into practice at our Interactive Workshops and in the Datathon Competition.

As harvest season quickly approaches, Niagara’s grape growers and winemakers are keeping a steady eye on the grapes ripening in their vineyards. Congratulations to researcher, Chantal Buteau (Department of Mathematics) for being one of several Brock University researchers awarded an Insight Grant. In the federal government agency’s 2017 competition, Brock received a total of $2.2 million from SSHRC’s Insight Grants, Insight Development Grants, Partnership Development Grants and student research awards. It’s a chance to score a good deal while supporting students who want to help others.
The second annual Brock Bazaar will be held Saturday, Sept. 9 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Academic South hallway. The event raises money for the University’s Alternative Reading Week program, which allows students to participate in volunteer work both in the local community and abroad.
The community wide yard sale, hosted by the Brock Leaders Citizenship Society, allows Brock students, faculty and staff, as well as the broader public, to register and sell their items. The $20 registration fee for sellers is donated to the ARW program, while vendors get to keep whatever they make from selling their items.
Parking for the event is free in D Lot. Registration can be done online or by visiting Mackenzie Chown A-Block 204. Anyone who would like to donate items to the cause but is unable to attend can connect with organizers via the above link.
Brock University is beginning the school year with substantial changes to its Student Code of Conduct.
In addition to a revamped and more user-friendly look, the document has headed in a new direction by introducing restorative justice practices to address misconduct. Under the restorative justice conferences, students will need to consent to the process and take ownership of their actions before the harmed parties are invited into the conversation. Nearly 2,400 first-year students moved into one of Brock’s seven residences Sunday during the annual Move-In Day blitz. Many teary-eyed parents looked on as some 700 student volunteers helped carry fridges, televisions, suitcases and boxes into rooms across campus.

With more than 18,000 students descending on campus this week to begin the new Fall term, Dr. Gervan Fearon prepared his first-ever welcome message as Brock University President, focusing on human rights, mutual respect and the importance of being responsible citizens both on and off campus.

A new campaign, BrockU 4U, was launched this week to offer comprehensive support to students both on and off campus.
The campaign’s first initiative will be a series of ‘Ask Me’ booths that will be set up in high-traffic areas on campus beginning Sunday during the annual Move-In Day event. Manned with trained student ambassadors ready to answer any and all questions, the booths will continue to appear in a variety of locations throughout September and January as new students transition to Brock. For the second year in a row, Brock has a significant presence at the four-day convention that runs from Friday until Sunday in Toronto. Similar to ComicCon, Fan Expo Canada appeals to fans of comics, sci-fi, horror, anime and gaming.
Brock has a booth in the MTCC’s south building, where it will be in a high-traffic area close to Universal Studios, Cartoon Network and Showcase. The 20×20 booth includes two large video screens. The recruitment team has designed both a twelve-page comic book that tells the Brock story, as well as Cube Pals, three-dimensional paper figures of Isaac Brock and Boomer the Badger, plus a set of accessories for both.
The focus will be on the programs and departments at Brock that would appeal to typical Fan Expo goers the most, such as the Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts, Communication, Pop Culture and Film, Computer Science and the new programs in Game Design and Game Programming. Read the full story here
