The MPK is the only degree of its kind in Canada, designed to prepare students for careers in sport, exercise, and rehabilitation.

It is a full-time, 12-month (three-term) professional program that provides innovative hands-on lab-based courses, professional development, and 450 hours of Kinesiology-related practicums to prepare students for their futures.

Labs provides students with advanced knowledge and technical expertise in assessment, exercise prescription, program design and implementation, and knowledge mobilization.

Under the supervision of registered health professionals, including registered kinesiologists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, chiropractors, athletic therapists, clinical exercise physiologists, and more, students complete three unique practicums with diverse populations from children to seniors and athletes to individuals living with chronic disease and disability. Through these practicums, students apply their course-based skills and knowledge to the workplace, building competence and confidence and creating a resume that makes them sought-after in a variety of careers.

The MPK program helps students to develop transferrable skills related to communication, decision-making, and leadership to build their resumes and make them leaders in the field of Kinesiology.

MPK students may choose to complete one of three concentrations: Behaviour Change and Coaching, Exercise for Chronic and Aging Populations, or Clinical Practice in Kinesiology. Concentrations provide students with a curated group of courses and practice to develop specialized skills within Professional Kinesiology and differentiate themselves from others.

The MPK degree includes:

  • Business Skills & Entrepreneurship for Kinesiologists
• Three required half-credit practicum courses (150 hours each)
• Two half-credit electives
  • Choose from Kinesiology, Gerontology, Public Health, or Applied Health Sciences courses
• Three non-credit professional development seminars

• Stroke, cardiac, and cancer rehabilitation
• Coaching and high-performance training

Four-year bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology (or equivalent)

If your degree is not in Kinesiology, you must have completed course work in human anatomy, exercise physiology, psychomotor learning, biomechanics, exercise assessment/prescription or training principles, and ergonomics.

Minimum 78% (B+) over the last two years of study

Two letters of recommendation (at least one must be an academic referee)

Graduate Micro-Programs (GMPs) are designed for non-MPK students who are interested in gaining graduate-level expertise in professional kinesiology. Each GMP is comprised of three (3) half-credit courses – Professional Practice in Kinesiology plus two electives. Current GMPs are Behaviour Change and Coaching, Exercise for Chronic and Aging Populations, or Clinical Practice in Kinesiology.

GMPs are designed for those with real-life work experience and qualifications who demonstrate an ability and aptitude to succeed in graduate-level study, The GMPs may be used later towards an MPK degree.

Admission letter
Admission letters are issued by the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Post-Doctoral Affairs on the recommendation of the Master of Professional Kinesiology Program. Admission letters are uploaded to your my.brocku.ca account, in the ‘Application Status’ section.

Accepting your offer of admission
After receiving your admission letter, you will have 3 weeks to reply to our offer of admission. Please accept or decline our offer through your my.brocku.ca account. 

Final Documents 

Students accepting their offer of admission will need to provide official documents to finalize their admission. The documents that need to be submitted are listed as “Owing to Finalize Admission” on your my.brocku.ca account in the ‘Document Status’ section. Electronic copies can be sent to [email protected].

In order to facilitate the practicums and other experiential opportunities, there is an experiential education fee for MPK students. This fee contributes to events like orientation and community partner networking, as well as MPK polos for practicums and guest speakers in a variety of courses.

Do I need to find a supervisor?

The MPK is a course-based graduate program. Students are not required to find a supervisor, as there is no research component to the program.

What funding opportunities are available for course-based/professional students?

Our course-based / professional programs are typically self-funded; students are eligible to apply for internal awards and scholarships. Eligible graduate students can also apply for financial aid through programs such as the Ontario Student Assistant Program (OSAP), or other similar provincial/territorial/international student aid programs. Students are eligible to apply for scholarships.

Incoming MPK students with an average of 87% or higher will receive a $1000 Brock Professional Program Merit Entrance Scholarship.

MPK students are also eligible to apply for the $2000 FGSPA Spring Professional Development Award, given to two current MPK students each year.

Can I complete the program part-time?

The MPK program is only offered full-time.

I do not have a 78% average in my last two years of study, should I still apply?

The entrance averages each can differ based on the current applicant pool. You can still apply with an average less than 78%.

What are the program requirements to apply?

Successful completion of four-year bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology or equivalent (e.g., Human Kinetics, Physical Education, Exercise Science). Students who have not completed a Kinesiology degree must have completed courses in human anatomy, exercise physiology, psychomotor learning, biomechanics, exercise assessment/prescription or training principles, and ergonomics.

How do I apply?

The application process is entirely online and can be started here. Note: it is a two-step process starting through OUAC and finalized through the my.brocku.ca portal.

Can I mail or fax my application?

Application materials must all be submitted online. Mailed and/or faxed documents will not be accepted.

What is the deadline to apply?

Applications will be reviewed starting February 15^th. After this date, applications will be accepted and processed in the order they are received until the program is full.

How many practicums are there? How long is each practicum?

Students complete three (3) practicum courses (one per term). The three practicums will differ in setting, population, and supervisor. Each practicum is 150 hours in length.

Where can I complete my practicums?

Current practicum sites include physiotherapy/chiropractic clinics, athletic therapy clinics, community recreation centers, hospitals, adapted physical education and movement programs, schools, and high-performance training centres.

How do I find a practicum position?

Practicum positions are posted on an internal site for MPK students – and they are open only to MPK students. Students apply to individual practicums with a resume and cover letter. Practicum supervisors choose students to interview as part of the selection process. Successful applicants are chosen by the supervisors.

Are practicum positions guaranteed?

The MPK program will work with all students until they have secured a placement each term.

Are practicums only in the Niagara Region?

While most practicums are in Niagara, we also have some in the Hamilton and Toronto areas.

Can I find my own practicum?

In the winter and spring terms, students may find their own practicums, as long as they meet the program requirements.
