Brock’s Cool Climate Oenology and Viticulture Institute (CCOVI) raised a glass to celebrate its 20th year partnering with the Niagara Grape and Wine Festival on Saturday, Sept. 16. Continuing the long-standing tradition, CCOVI hosted three of its popular Educate your Senses wine and cheese seminars in Montebello Park in downtown St. Catharines, with some of the sold-out sessions attracting wine lovers from across Ontario, the U.S. and even Australia.
CCOVI will offer three more seminars at the festival on Saturday, Sept. 23.
Educate your Senses Schedule, Saturday, Sept. 23:
2 p.m. Chris Protonentis, Coyote’s Run
3 p.m. Brock alumni Richie Roberts, Fielding Estate
4 p.m. Marc Bradshaw, Strewn
Location: Roy T. Adams Bandshell, Montebello Park, St. Catharines
Cost: $3.50 per token, two tokens per seminar. Brock alumni will receive a free wine glass with registration and receive half off the seminar cost. Tokens are available for purchase at Montebello Park throughout each weekend. Registration for seminars will be at the Roy T. Adams Bandshell only. Seminars run rain or shine.

With a little bit of knowledge and a lot of imagination, Earth Sciences Professor Francine McCarthy plans to help curious minds uncover the geologic past of the Brock campus. During an hourlong guided walking tour of the University property, held as part of Science Literacy Week, McCarthy will provide insight into the geology of the landscape.
WHEN: Tuesday, September 19 from 5-6pm (arrive early)
WHERE: Meet in the James A. Gibson Library, Matheson Learning Commons

Brock University is hosting the St. Catharines Terry Fox Run this weekend, and it’s giving the community a chance to tour the labs where critical cancer research is taking place. Two labs are home to research funded directly by the Terry Fox Research Institute (TFRI) and a third is separately funded, but also conducts important cancer research.
WHEN: Sunday, September 17 – lab tours will start at 10:45 a.m

The Brock University Alumni Association will present Tony Abou-Assaleh with the Faculty of Mathematics and Science Distinguished Graduate Award on September 16 during the Alumni Recognition Reception, held as part of Homecoming weekend. Abou-Assaleh is an innovative entrepreneur and intuitive researcher who distinguished himself as an undergraduate in Brock’s Computer Science program by excelling in both his academic studies as well as extracurricular and community pursuits.
He created his own award-winning company, TitanFile – widely recognized for providing the best-in-kind software for secure access to legal documents. Along with his personal success, Abou-Assaleh continues to give back to the community. Coupled with his warmth, humour and comradely, Tony exemplifies the ideal qualities of Brock alumni. He was, and continues to be, a role model, industry leader and the kind of graduate Brock University is immensely proud to both recognize and call its own.

This year, 1,777 international students – including 1,160 undergrads and 617 students in graduate programs – have chosen Brock.
Second-year Mathematics and Statistics graduate student, Evans Boadi is among the first group of 10 ambassadors introduced at the International Open House including, part of the newly created Brock International Student Ambassadors program, which launched this year.
Selected students become ambassadors for the University and in exchange, the students get to pay domestic tuition rates, rather than international. Read the full story here

Almost two dozen Brock researchers – the majority from the Faculty of Mathematics & Science – received funding from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC). The $3.8 million in funding under NSERC’s 2017 competition for the Discovery research programs, is more than $1.4 million over last year’s results.
Brock’s funding includes Discovery Grants, Discovery Development Grants, Discovery Accelerator Supplements and the Northern Research Supplement, as well as master’s and doctoral student awards. Read the full story and the names of all recipients here

Durjay Chowdhury, a candidate in the Department of Computer Science, will present his Master of Science thesis defence on Monday, Sept. 11 at 9 a.m. in Mackenzie Chown H-Block 313.
His thesis is titled Approximation Algorithms using Allegories and Coq.
His examination committee members are Dr. Michael Bidochka, Chair; Dr. Martin Müller, External Examiner, (University of Applied Sciences Bonn-Rhein-Sieg); Dr. Michael Winter, Supervisor; Dr. Brian Ross and Dr. Ke Qui, Committee Members.
