Brock University is hosting the St. Catharines Terry Fox Run this weekend, and it’s giving the community a chance to tour the labs where critical cancer research is taking place. Two labs are home to research funded directly by the Terry Fox Research Institute (TFRI) and a third is separately funded, but also conducts important cancer research.
WHEN: Sunday, September 17 – lab tours will start at 10:45 a.m
NOTE: Participants can sign up for tours at the run registration table, but space is limited.

In his four decades of studying water contamination, Ian Brindle has learned that when something doesn’t smell right, there’s likely more to the story. That’s why the Brock University Emeritus Professor of Chemistry isn’t buying the story of the Niagara Falls, N.Y. Water Board that a discharge from a wastewater treatment plant which turned part of the Niagara River black on the weekend was completely above board. Read the full story here

Tomas Hudlicky, Brock University chemist and a leading Canadian scientist, has developed a synthetic compound that appears to be capable of killing cancer cells while leaving healthy cells intact. Tomas has created and patented several variations of the compound pancratistatin, which has been tested on 20 different types of cancer cells by a research team at the University of Windsor. The team’s paper, “Cancer Cell Mitochondria Targeting by Pancratistatin Analogs is Dependent on Functional Complex II and III,” appeared in the February issue of Scientific Reports. We acknowledge the land on which Brock University was built is the traditional territory of the Haudenosaunee (ho-din-anish-shonee) and Anishinaabe (A-nish-shin-aaabee) people, many of whom continue to live and work here today. This territory is covered by the Upper Canada Treaties and is within the land protected by the Dish with One Spoon Wampum agreement. Today, this gathering place is home to many First Nations, Métis and Inuit, and acknowledging reminds us that our great standard of living is directly related to the resources and friendship of Indigenous people.
