Inclusive Considerations for Multimodal Assessments

Are you looking to incorporate more choice models that include multimodal assessments, such as videos, infographics, and podcasts in your course assessments? This resource highlights considerations for inclusivity to include in multimodal assignment instructions for learners. Learners may not have thought about how to make their assignment product inclusive to their classmates or members of the teaching team. This is particularly important if their assignment will be part of a larger Open Educational Resource (OER), a public facing website, or part of a larger exhibit for community partners. The guidance below can be modified to fit the context of your particular course and discipline or any other guidance provide by community partners.

Videos 

For your video assignments please make sure that the following is taken into consideration before you submit your work: 

  • Did you include accurate captions for your video? Depending on how you recorded your video there may be different ways these captions can be included and edited.  
  • Is there a textual transcript for the video that can be shared as a .docx or .txt file? 
  • If there is no speaking in the video have you considered creating a descriptive text for your video? 
  • If your assignment video is of people talking ensure the mouths of those who are talking are clear in the image for those who may read lips. This may also mean reviewing your lighting choices. 

Podcasts 

For your podcast assignment please make sure the following in taken into consideration before you submit your work: 

  • Use a good quality microphone. The Brock Makerspace has podcast equipment and space you can use.  
  • If the podcast includes multiple voices make sure that there is no over talk between speakers 
  • Think about creating show notes that could help support listeners engage with the podcast. This could include definitions of terms or acronyms used, links to resources or anything else that could support engagement. 

Infographics 

For your infographic or image assignment please make sure the following is taken into consideration before you submit your work: 

  • Look over your font type and size for accessibility. Minimum 11 or 12 font in a sans-serif font will help support accessibility. 
  • Review the text use for headings and body text so that the information is easier to follow 
  • Review for colour contrast to ensure contrast between background, foreground and text colour elements 
  • Have descriptive links for anything you may be linking out to in the infographic.
