Kiel Ormerod and Lee Belding arrived at Brock as undergraduate students in the Faculty of Mathematics & Science and stayed on to obtain a PhD. Now these PhD graduates are pursuing post doctoral fellowships at two of the world’s most prestigious institutions – Harvard University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). ‘People can feel the buzz’: Enrolment stats are encouraging
“We are becoming a go-to place. The numbers show it” – Jamie Mandigo, Vice-Provost of Enrolment Management and International. While enrolment remains healthy for Brock University’s two largest Faculties – Social Sciences and Applied Health Sciences – other faculties delivering undergraduate programs, including the Faculty of Mathematics & Science, have seen increased confirmations in excess of 15% compared to last year. Brock research links taste buds to alcohol consumption
It turns out the taste buds in our tongues play a key role in guiding our alcohol preferences and consumption habits. A study by researchers from Brock University’s Cool Climate Oenology and Viticulture Institute (CCOVI) has found that people with very sensitive palates generally consume fewer alcoholic beverages than their less-sensitive counterparts, or even abstain altogether. Faculty of Mathematics and Science’s Board of Trustees Spirit of Brock award winners
Congratulations to the Faculty of Mathematics and Science’s Board of Trustees Spirit of Brock award winners, Aniqah Zowmi and Jessica Vickruck. For Zowmi, earning the Spirit of Brock designation meant accomplishing her final university goal. The passionate advocate of youth civic engagement is the first Brock student to win a 3M National Student Fellowship Award for her efforts to empower youth and encourage equality in education. Vickruck has demonstrated exemplary leadership in her research group and among graduate students in Biological Sciences. Her Master’s of Science produced three published manuscripts on pygmy carpenter bees, and her PhD will produce four major papers on the subject. Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching
The final Convocation ceremony saw Omar Kihel, Mathematics and Statistics Professor, receiving the Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching. Professor Kihel has contributed to the growth of the department by actively participating in curriculum development and establishing well-attended new courses in his areas of expertise. He has also served many years as an engaged member of the graduate program committee and is also conducting an active research program funded by NSERC. Read the full story here

Celebrating co-op and Convocation from near and far
Though they live in different countries and study in different programs, three graduating Brock students share one very important advantage – co-op experience. Phume Ngampornsukswadi, a graduand of Mathematics Integrated with Computer Applications (MICA) is currently nearly 14,000 kilometres from Brock on a military base in Thailand where he is fulfilling mandatory service. Biological Sciences student Susan Wang’s Master of Science thesis defence will take place Wednesday, June 14 at 1 p.m. in Mackenzie Chown H-Block 313.
Her thesis is titled Behavioural Thermoregulation and Energetics in Two Intermediate Hosts of Trematode Parasites.

His thesis is titled Elliptic Curve Cryptography using Computational Intelligence.

Grad student overcomes poverty by finding strength in education
When Van Hung Mai walks across Brock’s Convocation stage on June 9 as part of the Spring Convocation Class of 2017 to receive his PhD in Chemistry, he will be fulfilling the dreams he’s had since he was a child growing up amid poverty in a small mountain village in Vietnam. Mai will also be recognized for his contributions in research as a recipient of a Jack M. Miller Excellence in Research Award. Read his story here
