  • September 17: Terry Fox Run & Lab Tours

    The St. Catharines Terry Fox Run and a post-run party will be held on the Brock campus starting at 10 a.m. on Sunday, September 17, which is also the final day of the University’s Homecoming Weekend. The Fox event will also include remarks by Brock researchers, and tours of Brock labs where important cancer research is taking place.

    The five-kilometre route can be walked, run or wheeled. Parking will be free for the event, and there’s no entrance fee and no fundraising minimum.

    Registration is available on the Terry Fox Foundation website, where you can join as an individual or join the Brock University team.

  • August 17: Master of Science thesis defence

    Yiaolong Yang, a candidate in the Department of Chemistry, will present his Master of Science thesis defence by video conference on Thursday, Aug. 17 at 11 a.m. in Mackenzie Chown H-Block 313.

    His thesis is titled, (A) Constructing a Three-Dimensional DNA Nanomachine to Achieve Rapid Isothermal Signal Amplification for Nucleic Acid Detection (B) Regulation of DNA Strand Displacement Using an Allosteric DNA Toehold. 

    His examination committee members are Dr. Rick Cheel, Chair; Dr. Julianne Gibbs-Davis, External Examiner, (University of Alberta); Dr. Feng Li, Supervisor; Dr. Heather Gordon and Dr. Art van der Est, Committee Members.

    All are invited to attend.

  • August 18: Master of Science thesis defence

    Darren Hicks, a candidate in the Department of Physics, will present his Master of Science thesis defence on Friday, Aug. 18 at 1 p.m. in Plaza 600F.

    His thesis is titled, Preparation of Single Crystal Molybdenum Bronzes and Polycrystalline Rubidium Molybdenum Oxide.

    His examination committee members are Dr. Heather Gordon, Chair; Dr. Theocharis Stamatatos (Brock University), External Examiner; Dr. Fereidoon Razavi, Supervisor; and Dr. Shyamal Bose and Dr. Bozidar Mitrovic (for Dr. Maureen Reedyk), Committee Members.

  • First known warm-blooded lizard adds to dinosaur debate

    The first known warm-blooded lizard, the tegu, can heat itself to as much as 10 degrees C above its surroundings – making it unique among reptiles. Bizarrely, it only switches on its heating system at certain times of the year. The discovery may add to the debate about whether dinosaurs were warm- or cold-blooded, or something in between – a bit like these lizards.

    According to Brock University’s Glenn Tattersall, it may also provide a clue to how warm-bloodedness, or endothermy, first evolved. Read the full article here

  • Brock neuroscientist studying early autism detection in the brain

    Neuroscientist and professor in Brock University’s Department of Psychology, Sid Segalowitz is on a mission to determine how early the development of autism can be detected in a child’s brain. Segalowitz and his Brock research team are widely recognized for their ability to record and interpret brain waves gathered by an electroencephalogram (EEG). It’s one reason an international research team based at McGill University turned to them to help interpret data from hundreds of children. Read the full story here

  • Brock University to host St. Catharines Terry Fox Run

    As University President Gervan Fearon stated, “Brock is proud to be the host site for the 2017 St. Catharines Terry Fox Run” starting at 10am on Sunday, September 17. “In recent years, our students and staff have increasingly joined the community in supporting the event, and scientists at the University have received generous funding from the Terry Fox Foundation to do important cancer research at Brock.”

  • Earth Sciences Professor Francine McCarthy on harmful algal blooms

    Brock University’s Earth Sciences professor, Francine McCarthy provides further insight on the harmful algal blooms predicted for western Lake Erie in her interview with The Tribune. As McCarthy explains, “While the western end of Lake Erie will always be hit hardest by harmful algal blooms, it doesn’t mean the eastern end is immune.   • Brock prof says people have reason to be concerned over Niagara River discharge

    In his four decades of studying water contamination, Ian Brindle has learned that when something doesn’t smell right, there’s likely more to the story. That’s why the Brock University Emeritus Professor of Chemistry isn’t buying the story of the Niagara Falls, N.Y.   • New President sees a transformative period ahead for Brock University

    Dr. Gervan Fearon’s first day as President and Vice-Chancellor of Brock University was about meeting people and getting acquainted with the University community. Before he got from his car to the door of Schmon Tower, Fearon stopped in the morning sunshine of a courtyard to talk with students and staff from the Brock Student Life office, who beamed at their unexpected encounter.

    Midday, he pulled up a chair in Guernsey Market to join a group of science professors gathered for their daily lunchtime scrum. Today’s topic was superconductivity, and Fearon was fascinated to learn about the leading-edge research and innovation taking place at Brock. Read more about Dr. Fearon’s first day here
