Sexual Violence is a continuum of non-consensual sexual contact and behaviour which includes sexual assault, sexual harassment, stalking, sexual exploitation, indecent exposure, and voyeurism. Sexual Violence is a serious and complex issue that can adversely affect Brock Community Members.

101 Intro to SV support, education, and prevention
Consent is an active, affirmative, conscious, direct, unimpaired, ongoing and voluntary agreement to engage and continue to engage in sexual activity.
Consent is ongoing, which means that one kind of sexual activity does not mean that consent is given for another kind of sexual activity. A person may withdraw consent at any time during the sexual activity and consent only applies to a specific instance of sexual activity.
Consent cannot be given ahead of time. The existence of a relationship or past sexual activity does not alone constitute consent. Subsequent consensual sexual activity, communication, or other conduct of a sexual nature does not suffice as evidence of consent to prior sexual activity.
Consent cannot be given while impaired. All the elements of consent must be present, even if alcohol or drugs have been consumed. It is not acceptable for a person who is said to have engaged in sexual violence to use their own consumption of alcohol or drugs as an excuse for their mistaken belief that there was consent.
|Ableist||Prejudice and/or discrimination against people with mental or physical disabilities.|
|Ally||An individual that supports the struggles of a group; not part of the group him/herself.|
|Anti-Semitism||"Semitic" originally referred to a family of languages that included Hebrew. But it came to be applied directly to hatred of the Jews. Antisemitism is the systematic discrimination against denigration, or oppression of Jews, Judaism, and the cultural, intellectual, and religious heritage of the Jewish people. "|
|Bias||An inclination or preference either for or against an individual or group that interferes with impartial judgment.|
|Bisexual||A person emotionally, physically, and/or sexually attracted to members of the same sex, as well as members of the opposite sex.|
|Campus Climate||Current attitudes, behaviors and standards of faculty, staff, administrators and students concerning the level of respect for individual needs, abilities and potential.|
|CIS Gender||Cisgender is a term used to describe people who, for the most part, identify as the gender they were assigned at birth. For example, if a doctor said “it’s a boy!” when you were born, and you identify as a man, then you could be described as cisgender.|
|Coercion||The act of using subtle pressure, drugs, alcohol, or force to have sexual contact with someone against their will. Sexual coercion is ongoing attempts to have sexual contact of some kind with another person who has already expressed that they do not want to have sexual contact.|
|Discrimination||(Prejudice + Power) An action against other people on the grounds of their group membership, particularly the refusal to grant such people opportunities, access, or resources that would be granted to similarly qualified members of one’s own group. There are many forms of discrimination including: racism, sexism, heterosexism, ableism, ageism etc.|
|Disclosure||When a person reveals information to a staff member of HRE that they or another party has experienced an incident of Sexual Violence.|
|Feminist||The valuing of women, and the belief in and advocacy for social, political, and economic equality and liberation for both women and men. Feminism questions and challenges patriarchal social values and structures that serve to enforce and maintain men’s dominance and women’s subordination.|
|Gender||1) System of sexual classification based on the social construction of the categories "men" and "women," as opposed to sex which is based on biological and physical differences which form the categories "male" and "female." 2) A social identity usually conflated with biological sex in a binary system that presumes one has either male and masculine characteristics and behavior, or female and feminine characteristics and behavior.|
|Hounding||Hounding is when someone repeatedly asks, and through the process of wearing a victim down, they eventually receive a constrained “yes”.|
|Harassment||Unwanted conduct with the purpose or effect of violating the dignity of a person and of creating an intimidating, hostile, degrading, humiliating or offensive environment based on their race, color, sex, sexual orientation, religion, national origin, disability, and/or age, among other things.|
|Threats||Be they physical threats, or threats to harm someone else, somebody who makes you fearful to say “no” is engaging in coercive practices. If you are afraid of the repercussions of “no”, then consent is not freely-given.|
|Intersectionality||The study of intersections between forms or systems of oppression, domination or discrimination.|
|Islamophobia||Unfounded hostility towards Muslims, and therefore fear or dislike of all or most Muslims|
|Misogyny||The hatred or dislike of women or girls. Misogyny can be manifested in numerous ways, including sexual discrimination, denigration of women, violence against women, and sexual objectification of women|
|Sexism||Refers to the social, cultural, political, and educational subordination of one sex by another and can also refer to the unequal distribution of power and resources between men and women, both because of gender.|
|Sexual Violence||Sexual Violence is a spectrum of nonconsensual sexual contact and behaviour which includes sexual assault, sexual harassment, stalking, sexual exploitation, indecent exposure, and voyeurism.|
|Rape Culture||A culture where media, images, societal institutions, dominant cultural ideologies, and social practices support and condone sexual abuse by trivializing, eroticizing, and normalizing male domience and violence over women. It also blames victims for their own abuse.|
|Two- Spirit||The term two-spirit is a contemporary term that refers to Indigneous gender diversity, and includes the fluid nature of gender and sexual identity. Two-spirit can also represent having both masculine and feminine spirits in one person.The term includes gender identity, sexual orientation, and social roles, and regards gender as a spectrum. Importantly, an individual can identify as two-spirited because of their gender, sexual identity, roles, or sexual orientation.|
|Oppressed||A person who is dominated by an oppressor’s power. Domination also occurs when people with power are silent, making them complicit in oppression.|
|Oppressor||A person who utilizes their power to dominate another. They could also refuse to use that power to challenge domination.|
|Voyeurism||The practice of gaining sexual pleasure from watching unknowing others when they are naked or engaged in sexual activity.|

Sexual Violence Workshops
The SV unit has created an in person sexual violence workshops series and certificate for Brock member. Please go to our events and actions page to find out more and when they will be returning to campus!
We have created online versions of some of our featured workshops from our Sexual Violence Workshop Series. We are in the process of converting our workshops to online platforms due to COVID-19 and changes to on campus events.
The Consent and Disclosure Workshop will be available in mid June.
