SPMA 4P98 – 2024 World Rowing Championships (August 18 to 25 at the Royal Canadian Henley Rowing Course)

The Major Games field courses provide students with experiential opportunities to prepare them for careers at events such as the Pan Am Games, the World Cup of Soccer, the Commonwealth Games, the Canada Games, and more! In 2024 at the World Rowing Championships in Niagara, students with knowledge in sport management, social media, media relations, fan engagement, corporate partner activation, tourism, business, event management, and more will gain the experience for careers in the expanding global sport event industry projected at $2,300 billion by 2026.

The World Rowing Championships will be bringing 2,500 rowers and para-rowers from 80 different countries. The Henley Rowing Centre, home of national and international championships for over 100 years, and Brock will host the athletes. Brock will serve as the Athlete’s Village with access to the residence and the Leo LeBlanc Rowing Centre with a shuttle to the Henley Rowing Course every 30 minutes.

The Major Games Field Course (SPMA 4P98 – link) is designed for students seeking experiential opportunities in their field of study while volunteering at an international event such as the World Rowing Championships.

 

The goal of these courses is to advance applied and experiential learning, critical thinking, problem solving, event management, and cultural awareness through volunteer experiences at a major sporting event.

 

The flexibility embedded in the design of these courses enables students to their volunteer roles at the sporting event and the location. Three role options are available to students in the areas of: Media Relations, Social Media, and Fan Engagement/Partner Activation.

SPMA 4P98 HALF-CREDIT COURSE DESCRIPTION

The half-credit opportunities (SPMA 4P98 – link) enable students to volunteer in fundamental roles at the WRC. Students select their roles when they register as a volunteers at the Games. The roles include:

  1. Media Centre Liaison
  2. Social Media Squad
  3. Spectator Experience

Students must select their roles in advance. Only a specific number of students will be allocated to each role.

Commitment:

  • Social Media Squad | 2 shifts per day x 4 persons per shift = 8 persons per day x 8 days of championship; plus 4 days prior to championship start-up | August 14th – 25th, 2024
  • Media Centre Liaison | 3 shifts per day x 3-5 persons per shift = 9 – 15 persons per day x 8 days of championship | August 18th – 25th, 2024
  • Spectator Experience | 3 shifts per day x 2 persons per shift = 6 persons per day x 8 days of the championship | August 18th – 25th, 2024
  •  Complete training modules in July and August (approx. 6 to 12-hours total) hosted by Dr. Cousens in collaboration with experts from the WRC with knowledge of critical areas where students will be volunteering.
  • 30 hours of volunteering in a fundamental role of your choice (sign-up for your role on the WRC Volunteer Application attached below)
  • Complete World Rowing Championship volunteer training in-person and on-line
  • Complete venue training in August
  • Download and complete tasks on the SpacesEDU mobile app prior to and during the WRCs
  • Submit post-event reflection paper

Location

All shifts will be completed at the Royal Canadian Henley Rowing Course located in Port Dalhousie, St. Catharines.

Transferable Skills

  1. Have a broad conceptual view of sport event management and logistics (Content Knowledge).

  5. Use your understanding of how event logistics and management guide the overall integration of activities undertaken at the Games and support an appropriate environment for all participants at the Games (Applied Knowledge).
  6. Be a reflective professional who actively seeks to further self-knowledge and seeks opportunities to grow professionally (Lifelong Learning).
