His research examines sport history, sport policy, hockey culture, Indigenous sport, safe sport, and the broader social and political dimensions of sport in Canada. He is especially interested in how sport organizations shape public memory, governance, identity, media representation, and experiences of inequality.

His work includes scholarly articles, book chapters, edited collections, technical reports, and public-facing writing. Much of his research is collaborative and community-engaged, connecting academic inquiry with the priorities of sport organizations, Indigenous partners, students, and broader publics. He also serves as a partner lead in the Indigenous Hockey Research Network and is a co-founder of the Journal of Emerging Sport Studies, an open-access publication created to support emerging scholars and widen access to sport research.

McKee regularly contributes to public conversations about sport through media interviews, commentary, and applied research partnerships. His teaching is closely connected to his research, with current issues in sport policy, governance, history, and culture informing course design, classroom discussion, student mentorship, and collaborative writing projects.
