Follow along with undergraduate Amelia Jackson’s CLAS 3P98 (Engaged Leadership in Classics) project, When In Rome…Lift Heavy as she explores ancient athletic practices–from nutrition to training, recovery, and mindset–and applies them to her own experiences as a competitive powerlifter. Don’t miss her first contribution, “Grains and Gains: Understanding the Ancient Athletic Diet,” in which she describes the impact of an ancient Mediterranean diet with barley (lots!), figs, yogurt, cheese, fish, and vegetables on her training regime. Amelia represented Ontario at the 2025 Canadian Powerlifting Nationals. • Madison Poole and Léo Beaudoin granted competitive scholarships

We’re delighted to share good news from our graduate students!

Returning MA student Madison Poole has been been awarded a Graduate Student Scholarship for Studies in the History of Ideas from the Sansom Ideas Foundation. The Robert and Moira Sansom Ideas Foundation was established in 2013 with the intention to create a Graduate Student Scholarship for Studies in the History of Ideas, granted to students whose work relates to the History of Ideas including political science, history, philosophy, and the history of art.

First-year MA student Léo Beaudoin is the 2025 recipient of the Desmond Conacher Scholarship awarded by the Classical Association of Canada (CAC). The scholarship is offered in memory of Desmond Conacher, formerly Professor of Classics at Trinity College, Toronto, Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, and Honorary President of the CAC. Endowed through donations from his family, friends, colleagues, and universities with which he was associated, the scholarship aims to assist and encourage young scholars entering graduate studies in classics. Léo is the third consecutive Brock MA student to be awarded this honour, following in the footsteps of Connor O’Rourke (2024) and Daniel Belanger (2023). MA alumnus Elliot Fuller also received the award in 2015.

  • Allison Glazebrook elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada

Join us in congratulating Allison Glazebrook for her election as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada! As the Brock News reports, “Fellowship in the Royal Society of Canada reflects the collective judgement of leading scholars that a Canadian researcher has made remarkable contributions in their discipline, developing new knowledge, understanding and insights,” said Brock University Vice-President, Research Tim Kenyon.

Royal Society of Canada honours three Brock profs

Dr. Glazebrook notes about her research on women, gender, sexuality and slavery in ancient Greece, “When we’re learning about sexual labour in the ancient world, it’s an opportunity to reflect on present-day discourses around sexuality and sexual relations particularly in our court system,” she says. “It helps to expose unfair power structures still at play.”

Congratulations to Allison Glazebrook, winner of the 2025 Award of Merit from the Classical Association of Canada (CAC)

This annual award celebrates a member’s outstanding services to the discipline, including excellent or innovative teaching, mentoring of students and faculty colleagues, promoting knowledge of the ancient Greek and Roman world among the general public, and service to the CAC.

Professor of Classics Allison Glazebrook has received the Classical Association of Canada’s 2025 Award of Merit for outstanding services to the discipline.

Through her research and teaching, Glazebrook aims to promote the many voices of the ancient world, and expand diversity in the discipline today. As she notes in the Brock News, “Many Classical texts we study were authored by males, and when they talk about underrepresented groups of people, the tone is often denigrating and objectifying,” she said. “I’m trying to change the narrative to shed light on alternative perspectives.”
