Foundations in Leadership

To build anything, you first need a strong foundation. Building your skills and knowledge is no different.

The Foundations in Leadership Professional Development Series is designed to give you increased self-awareness and provide you with the skills you need to be an effective leader. We believe that leaders who invest in strong foundational skills are best positioned to be impactful in meaningful leadership opportunities.

Our unique four-level program offers practical application and practice time in a collaborative learning environment with students of all levels and backgrounds.. As you progress through each level, you will receive certification and build your self-awareness and skills in a variety of areas.

How does it work

Foundations in Leadership offers a “choose your own adventure” approach to skill development. Sign up for any workshops that fit your schedule and interests, attend, and make progress towards completing each level of the program.

Workshop topics include:

  • Effective Self-Expression
  • Conflict Management and Resolution
  • Public Speaking
  • Leading a Team
  • Passion and Purpose
  • Leadership Styles
  • And many more!

Guest lectures are also periodically held throughout the term, offered by students, staff, faculty, and even community members and alumni! Keep an eye on the event listings on ExperienceBU to catch one of our amazing guest lectures!

There are four levels of certification in Foundations in Leadership: Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum.

To achieve Bronze Certification, simply register for and attend five (5) workshops of your choice, fill out your End of Level Reflection, and you’ll be awarded a Bronze Certificate of completion.

Achieving Silver and Gold is just as easy! Simply complete five more workshops for Silver and five more for Gold and you’ll be almost finished your Foundations in Leadership experience.

The Platinum Level concludes the program with our capstone experience. Work directly with your Leadership Development Coordinator to apply your foundational skills to a project of your choice (e.g. an event, initiative, goal setting, assessment and plan, such as CliftonStrengths, and complete your final reflection to complete the program.

All sessions are posted on ExperienceBU and signing up is as easy as RSVPing for the session of your choice, attending, and completing the attendance and feedback form at the end of your session.

Sessions are often hosted on weekdays anywhere from 10am until 6pm, however times may vary to have as many offerings as possible and private sessions can be arranged by requesting a workshop via email to [email protected].

Each workshop runs for 90 minutes, making each level require approximately 7.5 hours of in-class work. Most students manage their time by taking one workshop every month, allowing them to finish their Bronze-Gold levels in about 2-3 Academic Years. Students are encouraged to find their own pacing, with some taking a workshop every week, and others simply trying to finish one level during their time at Brock

Sessions are offered 1-3 times per week to the public during the academic year but can be requested for specific groups via email to [email protected]. All public sessions can be found on ExperienceBU.

There is no cost to the program, however some optional components such as the CliftonStrengths assessment for the Platinum Level do incur costs.

Workshops are primarily offered in-person on Brock University’s campus; however specific workshops are run via Microsoft Teams on rare occasions. Room locations or online links are displayed on each workshop ExperienceBU posting.

Courses require at least 5 participants to run, as much of the content is dependent on being able to communicate and practice in groups with other participants.

Courses that do not meet the registration requirements within 1 day of the workshop will not run, and a cancellation email will be sent to any RSVP’d participants.

If you’ve completed a Brock Leads workshop in the past year, either on campus or through a class, we can make sure it counts toward your level progress in the Foundations in Leadership program.
