David Telfer and Atsuko Hashimoto from Brock’s Department of Geography and Tourism Studies and Miya Narushima from Brock’s Department of Health Sciences are organizing the Japan Studies Association of Canada (JSAC) 2026 Conference in October at Brock University.
This year’s conference theme is “Currents of Change: Navigating Beyond the Mist.” The conference offers a platform to facilitate a multi-disciplined approach to investigating Japan-Canada Studies under current geopolitical, economic, environmental and social stressors and their implications. From Japan’s defense position in the Indo-Pacific to its soft-power cultural influences, Japan-Canada studies are critical to understanding the future of East-West relations. The Japan Studies Association of Canada (JSAC) is a multidisciplinary international organization of scholars, students, and community members, focusing on Japan Studies and Japan-Canada relations.
Our keynote speakers are from Japan, the UK, and Finland. Their presentations are on the Health of Older Adults, Okinawa from an Indigenous Point of View, Okinawa and East-Asian Geopolitical Tensions, Right-wing Politics in Japan, Female Protagonists in Digital Games, and Tourism and Dark History. These guest speaker presentations are free and open to public.
The conference will take place between 15 and 18 October 2026 at Brock University. We welcome presentations by faculty members, undergraduate and graduate students, and post-doc researchers. Apply as a volunteer to help with conference operations or join us for the conference dinner.
