Examining migrant experiences in art and literature
The seventh annual Image and Imagery conference was held at the Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts Oct. 10 and 11. Organized by Associate Professors Catharine Parayre, Carmela Colella and Tamara El-Hoss of the Department of Modern Languages, Literatures and Culture, this year’s theme was “Im/Migrant Passages: Crossing Visual, Spatial and Textual Boundaries.” Scholars from Brock and beyond gathered to reflect on the migrant experience as expressed in literatures and the arts. The keynote artist’s talk was given by Leila Abdelrazaq, a Palestinian artist and author based in Detroit. She talked about her debut graphic novel, Baddawi, in which she shares her father’s experiences living in a Palestinian refugee camp. Abdelrazaq explained how her art draws on various cultural motifs to explore issues related to diaspora, cultural identity, refugees and borders. Pictured from left are El-Hoss, Parayre, Abdelrazaq and Colella.
