Existing Adult Learners may transfer from the BEd in Adult Education into the BA Adult Education (Honours) program with a Change of Major form from the Office of the Registrar.

If you prefer to stay in the BEd in Adult Education, you can do so and will have a number of years to complete your degree requirements.  Please be sure to check in with your Academic Advisor for a program plan that will map out your pass through completion.

You might decide to upgrade your pass undergraduate degree to the new Honours program. If so, you would need to check in with Admissions in the Office of the Registrar to get started with your re-entry for further studies.

Yes. Welcome to (or back to) post-secondary studies! The BA Adult Education (Honours) as a first degree will provide a strong foundation for subsequent studies throughout your life course. Consider it a valuable step forward to fulfilling your professional and personal aspirations.

With this degree, many of our learners go to graduate study at Brock and at other institutions around the province, across the country and around the world. If you aspire to graduate studies, there is no guarantee of admission that can be offered for the completion of this or any other program.  Please check in with the graduate programs of those institutions you have an interest in to be sure you are satisfying the particular admission requirements of that institution in any given year.

Some of our learners already hold undergraduate degrees upon entry to the BA in Adult Education (Hons.) program, while others seek the BA in Adult Education (Hons.) as their first university degree.  As subsequent degree candidates, most are eligible for advanced standing as determined by the Office of the Registrar, pending transcript review.

Courses can be completed online and are structured to work in windows of time, following the same semester system as face-to-face courses. For example, you may be directed by your online instructor to respond to a particular question or discussion prompt within four days or to submit a critique of a reading within ten days. Online courses are hosted on Brightspace, a learning management system platform. Technical support is available via email or telephone. In order to complete the online courses, you would need to have a computer with a reliable internet connection (preferably high-speed). All core Adult Education courses utilize digital resources with zero text costs. Where an elective course may require the purchase of a text, course materials can be ordered through the Brock Campus Store and will be delivered to your door.

The Adult Education Program delivers course content via Brightspace, our learning management system (LMS). Brightspace is a webapp that runs in your web browser that does not require a download. There are also free apps that can be used to access course content from mobile devices (iPhone, android, iPad, etc.). To ensure access to Brightspace, your device should be capable of running (at a minimum) one of the following browser versions:

• Chrome 107+ (released October 2022)
• Android Chrome 107+ (released October 2022)
• macOS Safari 16+ (released September 2022)
• iOS Safari 16+ (released September 2022)
• Firefox 106+ (released October 2022)

A fast and reliable internet connection is also recommended with at least a 1.5 Mbps upload and download speed as a minimum requirement. Test your speed here: https://www.speedtest.net/

You may be completing assignments using Microsoft Office and should have a device capable of running this suite of software as well. See this link for more info: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/microsoft-365-and-office-resources

Netbooks, Chromebooks and other light duty devices are not recommended.

Brock offers Adult Education elective courses year-round in the spring, summer, fall, and winter.  Core courses are offered each year in 12-week spring, fall, and winter semesters.  Summer session elective courses are offered in an intensive 6-week format.

As a part-time student, the recommended course load is one credit per term. Each of the Adult Education core courses is 72 hours in duration. Each term is approximately 12 weeks in duration (depending upon holidays, which may occur in a given term). Elective courses are offered in the spring, fall and winter terms, and if you wish, a condensed summer six-week term (mid-July through August). There is no limit to the time it takes to complete the program.

Realistically, you should be prepared to spend approximately 3 hours or more for every single hour of instruction in order to regularly check into the online course site, complete readings and assignments, engage with peers and instructors and otherwise fulfill course requirements. The courses are asynchronous, offered in windows of time, but there are expectations that the frequency of check-ins in the online course happen at least two to three times during the week in order to maintain discussion flows, manage deadlines and otherwise keep up with content and processes.

Advanced Standing may provide you with academic credit for your previous studies, decreasing the number of courses you will need to take to fulfill your degree completion requirements.

You may be exempted from some context or elective requirements based on the evaluation of your transcripts as completed by the Office of the Registrar at Brock. Any remaining context or elective courses you may need can be taken at Brock or on a Letter of Permission from another university, entirely online or face-to-face as you wish. Advanced standing is offered only upon consideration of academic transcripts.

Those who already hold an undergraduate degree would normally be eligible for the maximum advanced standing, coming into the program. If you have transcripts of an incomplete degree or a college diploma, you may be granted some advanced standing undergraduate credits toward your BA in Adult Education.

The Office of the Registrar completes the assessment once they have reviewed your transcripts. They will provide a written copy of their assessment to you along with your offer of admission.

You would still apply to the honours, and upon successful completion of the first three years, apply to graduate with a BA Adult Education (Pass).

Some of our learners in the BA in Adult Education (Hons.) and Certificate programs are employed in the community or private college systems. Other learners come from a variety of teaching and learning settings including health care, business and industry, the military, and human resources where skills development is a focus of their work. Some of our learners are experienced educators upon entry to the program, while others aspire to become educators. There is no guarantee of employment that can be offered upon completion of this program.

Please note, if your interest is in working as a teacher of children or adolescents in Ontario, you should be looking to make application to the BEd (leading to Certificate of Qualification from the College of Teachers) rather than the BA in Adult Education (Hons.) program. These are very different programs in terms of their approaches and outcomes. The courses are not transferable between programs. If you want to become a certified K-12 classroom teacher, please contact the Professional and Undergraduate Programs in the Faculty of Education (foeadvising@brocku.ca) for further information.

Before the start of the term, you would be charged for each course for which you have registered. The tuition for each full-credit course is currently $1217.88 (subject to change). Tuition for elective courses, which are half-credit, is $608.94 each (subject to change). Most of our courses are ZTC (zero text cost) to students, meaning that resources are available through Brock University Library digital repositories and access is included in regular tuition fees. In courses that still have an associated text, the material may be purchased for $50-$100 depending upon the text. The most current information on tuition and other fees may be found at:
