Mentorship

Helping Year 1 COSC Students navigate the challenges of transitioning to University

Delivered in partnership with the Faculty of Math and Science Mentorship Program

The Computer Science (COSC) Program offers ALL incoming YEAR ONE students in our program the opportunity to engage with an upper-year mentor. Unlike other mentorship programs, COSC students are automatically grouped together with a mentor to provide direct support early in their transition to university studies.

The COSC mentor exists to offer insight into effective study strategies and time management techniques, as well as to connect new students with opportunities to build strong social networks within their program. We strongly believe that mentorship can help ensure students are proactive rather than reactive during their studies.

Why Automatic Enrolment?

The transition to university can be a complicated process with many new experiences to prepare for. Some of those experiences are obvious; others are not so obvious – and this can make it challenging for students to know what questions to ask in order to prepare appropriately. Automatic enrolment provides students with guaranteed support, even when they might not be aware that they need it. Mentors check in periodically with their mentees throughout the term with reminders and resources in hopes of building connections that will grow and strengthen from year to year. Overall, a student’s individual needs and interests will dictate their level of engagement in the program.

We also respect a student’s right to decline enrolment to participate in this initiative. While they are strongly advised to remain enrolled, students will have the chance to de-register at the beginning of the academic year.
