Have you ever wondered how physical activity affects the time between each heartbeat?

  • What is the study about?

Heart rate variability, the time between heartbeats, has been linked to dysfunction and disease. Various factors like physical activity level may be associated with heart rate variability. This study may help us better understand the link between these variables to increase our ability in detecting and mitigating chronic diseases affecting the autonomic nervous system and cardiovascular system.

  • Who can participate in this study? 

We are seeking individuals aged 55 and older who can walk for six minutes without stopping. However, participants must not smoke and should not have chronic hypertension, cardiovascular or metabolic diseases, physical disabilities that affect posture or the lower extremities, or long-term medication use that impacts the autonomic nervous system.

  • What’s involved in this study?

The study will involve a single, approximately 60 minute in-person session at Brock University in Welch Hall room 22 (free parking is provided). In this study, you will be attached to a heart monitor, lie on a padded table for 10 minutes before and after walking for 6 minutes consecutively, and have your blood pressure and ankle-brachial index recorded before and after the walk using a blood pressure cuff, stethoscope, and an audible doppler. Insoles will also be placed in your shoe during the 6-minute walk to track your walking speed and distance covered. You will also be required to complete three quick and easy questionnaires to record your physical activity level and functionality appreciation, a measure of positive body image.
