Have you ever wondered how bones rebuild stronger after exercise?

What is this study about?

  • This study examines how bones and inflammation respond to repeated days of high-impact jumping exercise in middle-aged adults. By measuring short-term changes in blood markers related to bone building, bone breakdown, and inflammation, the study explores whether bones continue to respond or become less responsive with repeated exercise. This work is important because it can help identify how often high-impact exercise should be performed to best support bone health at different ages and reduce the risk of bone loss over time.

Who can participate?

  • Middle-aged adults, ages 40 to 55
  • We are only interested in recruited in male participants at this time.
  • Participants in this study must consider themselves to be healthy and recreationally active. Individuals must be free from diagnosed bone, metabolic, inflammatory, or cardiovascular conditions and not taking medications known to affect bone metabolism or inflammatory responses. These criteria help ensure that any changes observed in bone and inflammatory markers are due to the exercise intervention rather than underlying health conditions.

What is involved?

  • Participation in this study involves attending the laboratory on three consecutive days (morning) to complete a supervised high-impact jumping exercise session. Each testing session is approximately 1.5 hours in length. However, the exercise circuit component is only 10 minutes in length. Participants will provide small blood samples before and after exercise so researchers can measure markers related to bone health and inflammation. Researchers will also ask participants to complete a height and weight assessment, as well as an activity and exercise questionnaire. All sessions will be closely monitored, and participants will be guided through the exercises to ensure safety and consistency.

What do individual’s get for participating?

  • Participants will be compensated $20 CAD for their time.
