Canada Impact+ Research Training Awards

The Canada Impact+ Research Training Awards is a targeted, one-time initiative designed to recruit international or returning Canadian doctoral and postdoctoral researchers to Canada. These awards support key priority areas, helping to build capacity, strengthen the research ecosystem and enhance Canada’s global competitiveness.

Value and Duration

Doctoral: $40,000 per year, for three years.

Postdoctoral: $70,000 per year, for two years.

Agency: Any of the three federal granting agencies–CIHR, NSERC, or SSHRC

Allocation: The number of nominations for doctoral and/or postdoctoral Canada Impact+ Research Training Awards that institutions may submit to any of the agencies

Award: Funding offered or directly held (in the award holder’s name) from CIHR, NSERC, or SSHRC

Award holder: An individual who has an active award from CIHR, NSERC, or SSHRC

CIHR: Canadian Institutes of Health Research

Impact+ Training Awards: Canada Impact+ Research Training Awards

Institution: A Canadian post-secondary institution that receives an allocation for the Impact+ Research Training Awards

Nominator: An eligible faculty member who has been selected by their institution to use one or more allocations

Nominee: An individual who has been selected by a nominator for an Impact+ Training Award from CIHR, NSERC, or SSHRC

NSERC: Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada

Priority Research Areas: Eight research areas prioritized for funding by the Government of Canada and listed in the News Item.

SSHRC: Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council

For nominators:

  • Nominator holds an active grant from the eligible list of grants.
  • Grant received a payment or has a planned payment in the 2025-26 or 2026-27 fiscal year (April 1, 2025 to March 31, 2027).
  • Nominator is eligible to supervise doctoral and/or postdoctoral researchers, as per the institution’s policies.
  • Nominator has accounts in good standing with CIHR, NSERC and/or SSHRC and has not been deemed ineligible to hold and/or apply for funds for reasons of breach of policies on responsible conduct of research, such as ethics, integrity or financial management policies.

For nominees:

  • Nominee is currently studying or working abroad.
  • Nominee does not have a current affiliation with a Canadian institution.
  • Nominee is not currently benefiting from other tri-agency funds for the same purpose.
  • Nominee’s research project is within one of the eight Priority Research Areas.
    • Advanced digital technologies (including AI, quantum, and cybersecurity)
    • Health, including biotechnology
    • Clean technology and resource value chains
    • Environment, climate resilience, and the Arctic
    • Food and water security
    • Democratic and community resilience
    • Manufacturing and advanced materials
    • Defence and dual-use technologies

For doctoral nominees:

  • Nominee is eligible to enroll in a doctoral program at the nominating institution in Canada as of the award activation date.
  • Nominee does not hold a tenure or tenure-track appointment or is not on leave from such an appointment (some exceptions apply; see the Tri-agency research training award holder’s guide for details)
  • Nominee is not holding and has never held a doctoral-level scholarship from any of the federal granting agencies.

For postdoctoral nominees:

  • Nominee is qualified to undertake postdoctoral research at the nominating institution in Canada as of the award activation date.
  • Nominee does not hold a tenure or tenure-track appointment or is not on leave from such an appointment.
  • Nominee is not holding and has never held a postdoctoral-level scholarship from any of the federal granting agencies.

Application details

Nominators may submit up to one doctoral and/or one postdoctoral application, for a maximum of two applications per nominator. Complete applications must be submitted by Friday, May 15, at 4 p.m. EST Due to the tight timelines of this competition, no late applications will be accepted.

Please submit one statement per application, to a maximum of two pages, addressing each of the sections outlined below. The statement should provide specific details and clearly demonstrate your commitment to supporting the nominee.

As part of your statement, please provide a clear timeline of the nominee’s professional development plan for the duration of the three-year award.

Research environment

Describe the nominee’s research environment, clearly stating your commitment to supporting their success. Examples of commitment include, but are not limited to:

  • Mentorship and supervisory support
  • Opportunities for collaboration
  • Dissemination and/or knowledge translation
  • Resources (e.g., funding, facilities, personnel)
Professional development

Describe your commitment to the nominee’s professional leadership development, clearly outlining the resources, training opportunities, and/or mentoring activities that will be provided to support their career development. These could include, but are not limited to:

  • Knowledge translation/mobilization
  • Teaching opportunities
  • Communication skills (academic, public, and/or stakeholder engagement)
  • Writing skills (e.g., grants, manuscripts)
  • Collaboration and team-based research
  • Innovation and entrepreneurship
  • Community building and leadership

This section is an opportunity for the nominee to provide information supporting their nomination to the Canada Impact+ Research Training Awards program. Nominees are asked to provide a detailed list of their contributions, outcomes, and other activities to support the information that is shared in the Canada Impact+ Nomination form and the Supervisory Statement letter. 

The CV is a maximum of one page and can include the following information: 

  • Publications (Research Articles, Review papers, Book Chapters, and other published work) 
  • Published Abstracts 
  • Conference Presentations (please note whether Oral or Poster)
  • Creative Activity 
  • Scholarships, Awards and Recognitions 
  • Other Activities (Leadership, Mentorship, Guest Lecture, and other Knowledge Mobilization activities)

Nominating institutions and nominees are expected to follow all presentation instructions, to allow the adjudicators to provide a fair and balanced assessment of the nomination. Any information submitted beyond the limits stated in these instructions may affect the nomination’s eligibility in the competition. 

Please follow these formatting guidelines:

  • Size all pages to 8 ½” x 11″ (216 mm x 279 mm).
  • Use a minimum of single line spacing (no narrow spacing).
  • Put all text in 12 pt, Arial, black font with standard (not condensed) character spacing.
  • Set minimum margins of 0.79″ (2 cm) around all pages. 
  • Before uploading, save/export your attachment as an unprotected PDF (i.e., without security measures locking or password protecting the document).
  • Each uploaded PDF cannot exceed 5 MB.
