This award supports students in gaining new experiences and opportunities while also supporting faculty members’ research.

Value: $5000, less applicable government remittances

Deadline to apply: Jan. 15 annually

Applicants are reminded that both the sponsoring faculty member and the participating student are required to work together to complete the application.

This award recognizes student research that contributes to and advances research and scholarship in the Faculty of Social Sciences.

Value: $1000 to 1500

Deadline to apply: Two competitions annually: Jan. 10 and Mar. 10

This award award is to support FOSS students’ participation in scholarly conferences.

Value: $300 (max) for virtual conference participation or for in-person participation at a conference within North America; $700 (max) for in-person participation at a conference outside North America

When to Apply: Applications can be submitted upon acceptance to present at a conference and must be received at least 4 weeks prior to the conference date or date of travel.

The Faculty of Social Sciences recognizes the excellence of graduate student writing and research through four separate awards:

  • Best Paper in a Graduate Course ($500)
  • Best Graduate Major Research Paper ($500)
  • Best Graduate MA Thesis ($500)
  • Best Graduate PhD Thesis ($500)

Nominations are made internally by Department/Centre faculty. The awards are adjudicated by a committee consisting of the two Associate Deans with one additional faculty member from the Faculty of Social Sciences.

The Faculty of Social Sciences recognizes and supports excellence in undergraduate student writing with two Best Essay Prizes, one at the Department/Centre level, and one at the Dean’s level.

  • Best Essay Prizes – Department/Centre Level ($100)
  • Dean’s Undergraduate Award for Excellent Writing ($500)

Winners of the Best Essay Prize at the Department/Centre level are automatically considered for the Dean’s Undergraduate Award for Excellent Writing.
