What is this study about?
- This study explores how fitness, and life satisfaction differ among older adults who regularly attend the YMCA of Niagara, BrockU Bfit Centre, and those who are not members of any fitness facility. By examining these differences, our research will help us better understand how community based activity supports healthy aging, independence, and overall well being.
Who can participate?
- We are seeking adults aged 55 and older to take part in this study. Eligible participants may be YMCA of Niagara members, BrockU Bfit Centre members, or non members.
- YMCA and Bfit members must have held their membership for at least six months and attend their centre a minimum of twice per week.
- Individuals in the non member group must not have belonged to the YMCA, BrockU Bfit, or any other gym within the past six months.
What is involved in participating?
-
Participation involves two phases:
- Online questionnaires (approximately 30 minutes): Complete four questionnaires on physical literacy, confidence in preventing falls, life satisfaction, and physical activity.
- In-person session (45 minutes): Schedule one session at the BrockU Bfit Centre, Canada Games Park, or a YMCA of Niagara location. You will complete five basic movement tasks (running, hopping or galloping, kicking, throwing, and backward walking), which will be video-recorded for scoring. You will also complete the Senior Fitness Test, which assesses functional fitness through activities such as chair stands, arm curls, flexibility tests, and a stepping test. These fitness tasks will not be video-recorded.
What do individuals get for participating?
- Participants will receive a $20.00 gift card of their choice for Amazon or Tim Hortons.
- Participants will have a chance to learn about how physical movement and community based activities affect their lifestyle.
