Geography (MA)

Advisor: Micheal Ripmeester

Program Entry Date: Fall 2021

Having been challenged by social problems in the past few decades have ignited my passion for understanding social theories, models and critical issues; thus, my Brock story. Reviewing the program specificities and requirements made me realize how critical the Social Science Faculty upholds the standards of critical thinking and problem-solving. Also, my search for universities revealed that Brock has great professors with amazing research experiences. Moreover, the ratio of professors to students in the M.A Geography program made me know that this was the best university to have my graduate education!

I must confess, Brock’s Graduate programs are challenging. Although there are great expectations, students get motivated along the route to meet them and mature appropriately. The M.A. Geography program was more challenging in the first term of the 2021 academic year. This is because I had to take the first term of the program in my home country while awaiting my visa outcome. Therefore, combining family responsibilities with the enormous course readings, assignments and presentations was no fun. However, I benefitted significantly from student resources on campus that have improved my Grad experience at BrockU. I am grateful for the counselling and career advice that I have received from my faculty members, Brock Career mentors and supervisors that have shaped my career objectives. I am way better than when I came, to studying and researching social science and in the general areas of academia.

I am currently in the final stages of my M.A Geography program and I am set to graduate in June 2023. My research focuses on the media representation of housing problems in Accra, Ghana. My thesis statement was inspired by the fact that although there are a number of academic publications on housing issues but the media representation of housing-related issues in Accra is not given the utmost attention. Therefore, I have done a content analysis of media representation of affordable housing issues in Accra that goes beyond insights into policy documents.

Apart from the intense academic activities, Brock University provides graduate students with several fun-filled experiences to have fun with. More importantly, St. Catharines and the Niagara Region are perfect locations for the university due to the low crime rate, moderate cost of living and avenue to meet new people through tourism. I believe that when I graduate from my program at Brock, I would contribute to solving societal problems through my analytical and critical thinking skills. I urge everyone to make their dream come true at Brock because when it comes to an amazing university to pursue your dreams, give it to Brock!
