Hedda Gabler meets Bridesmaids in Maria Irene Fornes’ play, “Fefu and Her Friends”

Fefu and Her Friends is an innovative play that explores womens experiences in 1930s America, presented by the Department of Dramatic Arts 4F56 Ensemble. This performance will take place in the Marilyn I. Walker Theatre, Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts, 15 Artists Common, on October 21 & 22, 2016.

Eight radical women gather for a weekend retreat in rural New England. Welcome to Fefus, where friends from all walks of life are relentlessly optimistic that they can change the world with humour and imagination. Although they face adversity in a world where women have voted for a mere 15 years, these females rock it!

Staged for a small audience in an intimate setting, the production takes viewers beyond the living room, down to the basement and up to the attic, on a literal and metaphorical journey.

Maria Irene Fornes, who immigrated to the U.S. from Cuba, is celebrated for her off-beat work that grew out of the many Womens Centres she founded, and where she taught leading American playwrights such as Paula Vogel and Sarah Ruhl. Although her lifes work was to put womens experience onstage, some scholars reject Fornes as anti-feminist. Our door is open for you to join the debate!

Directed by Gyllian Raby, the 4F56 Ensemble includes: Sarah Bradford, John Clancy, Nikka Collison, Caroline Coon, Olivia De Sousa, Linda Duong, Ben Fallis, Sydney Francolini, Lena Hall, Chantal Hatton, Nicole James, Alexandra Li Tomulescu, Jonah McGrath, Elena Milenkovski, Dana Morin, Elizabeth Pereira, Allison Pressnail, Rachelle Scott, Kaitlyn Seguin, and Demetri Tsioros.
