ASSISTANT PROFESSOR, ONE-YEAR INSTRUCTIONAL LIMITED TERM APPOINTMENT (ILTA), PERFORMANCE SCENOGRAPHY

The Department of Dramatic invites applicants for a one-year Instructional Limited Term Appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning July 1, 2026. To fulfill the 80% teaching, 20% service expectations of the position, the successful candidate will teach a range of courses in scenography and technical production; contribute to scenography, technical production, and/or producing for DART’s season; and contribute to curriculum development. Courses will include DART 1F40: Scenography and Stagecraft and at least one of DART 2P61: Design for Theatre – Scenographic Environment or DART 2P62: Design for Theatre – Embodied Scenographies.

Qualifications 

The Department of Dramatic Arts is seeking candidates with expertise in mediated, spatial, and/or embodied scenographies and related technical skills, with experience in postsecondary teaching. Candidates will hold a relevant PhD, MDes, MFA, or equivalent professional experience, and will demonstrate significant professional contributions to design for theatre. Specific scenographic expertise may include: extended, mixed, and/or virtual reality scenographies; lighting, projection, sound, animated and/or intermedial scenographies; set and/or properties design and decoration; site-specific, land-based, and/or other spatial scenographies; costume, hair, makeup, and/or performance prosthetics design; puppetry design. In addition to creative and technical excellence in performance scenographies and techniques, candidates will provide evidence of successful, theoretically-informed teaching and/or mentorship in postsecondary theatre education. Demonstrated expertise in anti-supremacist approaches to teaching theatre, theatre creation and/or professional mentorship is essential. Experience in arts administration, producing, professional associations, academic service, and/or course and curriculum design is preferred.

Dossiers will ideally demonstrate how pedagogical principles are integrated into the applicant’s post-secondary teaching and/or mentorship.

Evidence of professional impact and references from professional peers will be considered evidence of professional experience equivalent to a terminal degree.

PROJECT COORDINATOR

Please note: This is a part time, 20 hours per week, fixed term contract set to conclude in April, 2027.

About the Role:

Reporting to the Department Chair, the Project Coordinator supports the execution of course-level production outcomes within the Dramatic Arts (DART) program. The incumbent is responsible for coordinating a variety of theatrical events, including performance festivals, full-scale productions, and student thesis projects, while also managing relationships with partner theatre companies. The incumbent ensures that all activities are aligned with the department’s objectives and revenue generation goals.

The Department of Dramatic Arts (DART) is housed in exceptional theatre creation facilities at the Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts in downtown St. Catharines, Ontario.

Serving approximately 160 majors, DART offers a BA Honours in Dramatic Arts with a strong emphasis on experiential and work integrated learning in theatre studio and workshop environments. DART’s annual, 12-month theatre season engages students and visiting artists in two mainstage productions, a fully-resourced student-led collective creation, a student-led festival of one-act plays, and the DART Performance Research Institute’s series of professional research and development residencies. DART is committed to transforming its approach to post-secondary theatre education through an intersectional, anti-supremacist understanding of equity.

The Project Coordinator will: 

  • Coordinate course-level production; plan and execute performance festivals and productions (three small performances in Fall-Winter, one full-scale in Winter, a full-scale festival in Spring, individual student thesis projects);
  • Collaborate with faculty and students to ensure all production elements meet educational standards and objectives;
  • Coordinate intersections between required DART courses and MainStage productions, including technical production and theatre creation courses;
  • Facilitate communication and scheduling between course instructors and production teams to optimize resource allocation and student participation;
  • Support the integration of MainStage productions into the curriculum, enhancing the learning experience for DART majors;
  • Manage ticket sales for Winter and Spring events, ensuring revenue generation;
  • Manage group ticket sales for performances targeting non-DART Brock students and high school matinees, identifying opportunities for significant revenue streams;
  • Develop and maintain relationships with partner theatre companies for Summer Institute WIL courses, ensuring budget-neutral resources through industry professional residencies;
  • Coordinate DART course elements related to fees for experiential learning activities, ensuring budget neutrality;
  • Support students in organizing ticketed events within DART spaces;
  • Manage front-of-house operations for public-facing events, ensuring a positive experience for attendees;
  • Assist with DART course collection and timetabling, addressing the complexities of experiential learning activities in theatre-making spaces.

Key Skills and Experience:

  • College Diploma in a related discipline (stage management, technical theatre, event planning, business). The equivalent combination of education and experience would be considered;
  • Previous administrative and/or project coordination experience;
  • Understanding of the production process and the various elements involved;
  • Ability to manage timelines, budgets, and resources effectively;
  • Ability to navigate the complexities of course integration and experiential learning;
  • Ability to build and maintain relationships with external partners, (theatre companies and community organizations).

Preferred or Asset Skills: 

  • Experience in a production role, (stage manager, production assistant, etc.);
  • Experience in coordinating projects or events;
  • Experience in ticket sales, marketing for events, or fundraising initiatives;
  • Experience in a post-secondary environment.

Salary and Total Rewards: 

  • Job Grade I, Salary Scale ($52,093-$84,476);
  • Target Hiring Salary: $52,500*

PROJECT ADMINSTRATOR

About the Role:
Reporting to the General Co-director of the Staging Better Futures/Mettre en scene de meilleurs avenirs SSHRC Partnership, the Project Administrator is responsible for supporting project operations, and the workflows of the Knowledge Sustainability Cluster. The incumbent maintains project management tools and templates, meeting coordination, internal communications, maintaining accurate records, managing content for the project’s digital archive, and financial administration for the project.

Staging Better Futures/Mettre en scène de meilleurs avenirs (SBF/MSMA) is a Canada wide, cross-sectoral partnership focused on equity in post-secondary theatre education. The bilingual project involves more than 90 individual participants across Canada. Partners include colleges, universities, theatre companies, and arts service organisations.

The Project Administrator will: 

  • Maintain project management tools (member directory, meeting and other document templates, timeline template);
  • Co-ordinate meetings of the co-directors, Knowledge Sustainability Groups, and other meetings requiring simultaneous interpretation;
  • Maintain a calendar of annual activities (deliverables, milestones);
  • Facilitate translation and interpretation;
  • Coordinate, budget, book, and manage expenses for travel for project co-directors and postdoctoral fellows;
  • Develop and implement the project’s strategic communications plan and the project’s brand/visual identity;
  • Oversee consistency with the project’s bilingual glossary and lexicon in project communications.
  • Collect, organize, and maintain accurate and up to date records of Project Management and Operations activities;
  • Record meetings and distribute and archive recordings;
  • Collect, organize, format, and upload research records in multiple media (including text, sound, video, and images);
  • Contribute to development and implementation of a project-wide data sustainability plan, monitor consistency;
  • Manage all aspects of invoice payment, process cheque requisitions, hires and PAPs on Workday;
  • Prepare and monitor RA contracts;
  • Liaise with partner institutions to establish agreements, manage annual reporting, and provide guidance on eligible expenses;
  • Prepare and submit required reports to SSHRC and other funding agencies;
  • Maintain monthly budget reconciliations;
  • Assist with grant applications and other fundraising.

Key Skills and Experience:

  • Undergraduate degree in Art, Humanities, or Social Sciences, or Event, Stage, Production, or Project Management Certificate. The equivalent combination of education and experience would be considered;
  • Bilingual (French-English);
  • Related experience in roles that support operations and communications in event, stage, production, or project management, or a related field;
  • Related experience in roles that support digital archiving, records management, and data sustainability;
  • Related experience in financial administration;
  • Coordination and organisational skills with the ability to manage time, meet deadlines, and manage workflow;
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to analyse complex information with attention to detail and accuracy;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft, Google, and Adobe software suites;
  • Demonstrated interest in emerging issues in data sustainability, including platform dependency, accessibility, and data security;
  • Demonstrated experience in managing project budgets and timelines;
  • Proficiency in Workday or other institutional financial management systems;
  • Highly developed sense of discretion and judgement to deal ethically with sensitive and/or confidential information;
  • High level of cultural competency and ability to work effectively with collaborators from differing disciplinary backgrounds, expertise, and lived experiences;
  • Promotes and embodies inclusivity and respect within the workplace and the broader community.

Preferred or Asset Skills: 

  • Experience working in higher education/postsecondary;
  • Expertise or lived experience in one or more areas of minoritization contributing to research focus: Indigeneity, racialization, disability, gender and/or sexual diversity, linguistic minoritization, socio-economic minoritization;
  • Working knowledge of html, xml, other digital markup languages, content management systems (especially Drupal), and/or text digitization and/or digital archiving;
  • Familiarity with federal and/or provincial research granting bodies, programs, and guidelines.

Salary and Total Rewards: 

  • Job Grade I, Salary Scale ($52,093-$84,476);
  • Target Hiring Range: $52,093-$70,000*
