The Wine and Spirits Education Trust is the international standard for certification for the beverage alcohol industry.

WSET Level 2 Award in Wine is a pre-requisite for WSET Level 3 Award in Wine (offered once a year, starting in January).

WSET Level 1 Award in Wine is not a prerequisite to register in the Level 2, however may be beneficial, particularly for those with little formal training or experience in wine.

What you need to know:

The course will meet in-person once a week for 8 weeks with your course instructor, plus a 9th week for your examination.

This course prepares the student for the WSET qualification and is guided by approved WSET educators. The student can contact the educator any time for the duration of the scheduled course.

Students will taste a wide range of wines during their program. A description of the tastings for this course can be found in the “Recommended Tasting Samples for this Course” section of the WSET Level 2 in Wines – Course Specification, available for download at the bottom of this section.

Examination: The examination will be held in the final week of the course. The examination consists of 50 multiple choice questions, you are given 1 hour to complete the examination. 55% is required to achieve a pass.

Learning objectives:

  • Learn how wine is made.
  • Explore the style and quality of wines made from over 22 regionally important grape varieties produced in over 70 wine growing regions around the world.
  • Learn how environmental factors, grape growing, winemaking and maturation options influence the style and quality of wines.
  • Understand the principles of the production of sparkling and fortified wines.
  • Learn how classifications and labelling terms indicate origin, style and quality.
  • Understand in order to apply basic principles of wine storage, service and food and wine pairing.
  • How to describe wine using the WSET Level 2 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine (SAT)
