The Faculty of Social Sciences recognizes the excellence of graduate student writing and research through four separate awards:
- Best Paper in a Graduate Course ($500)
- Best Graduate Major Research Paper ($500)
- Best Graduate MA Thesis ($500)
- Best Graduate PhD Thesis ($500)
Nominations are made internally by Department/Centre faculty. The awards are adjudicated by a committee consisting of the two Associate Deans with one additional faculty member from the Faculty of Social Sciences.

The Faculty of Social Sciences recognizes and supports excellence in undergraduate student writing with two Best Essay Prizes, one at the Department/Centre level, and one at the Dean’s level.
- Best Essay Prizes – Department/Centre Level ($100)
- Dean’s Undergraduate Award for Excellent Writing ($500)
Winners of the Best Essay Prize at the Department/Centre level are automatically considered for the Dean’s Undergraduate Award for Excellent Writing.
