Top Holocaust Scholar to give Humanities Graduate Student Seminar, Public Talk

Professor Kristin Semmens (University of Victoria) will give a lunchtime seminar for graduate students in the Department of History (Thursday, Sept 21) to discuss her experiences researching and writing her new book, Under the Swastika in Nazi Germany. This workshop will provide graduate students will an invaluable opportunity to learn about knowledge mobilization, dissemination, and communication from a leading scholar. Lunch will be provided. BUHS is an undergraduate students’ society at Brock University closely affiliated with the department of History. The purpose of the Brock University Historical Society is to promote student interest and engagement in the study of history and its affiliation with the local Brock community.

The Society organizes academic and social events, giving students an opportunity to develop connections with faculty and those in history-related fields. The core mandate of the society is to develop opportunities for students interested in history to get to know each other, succeed academically, organize volunteer opportunities and gain valuable experiences.

Professor McDonald to Launch New Book in the Isle of Man

Professor Andrew McDonald will be on location at the Manx Museum Lecture Theatre this month to discuss his latest book, “A Visitor’s Guide To The Medieval Kingdoms Of Man And The Isles, 1066-1275.” He will also spend time preparing for his upcoming Travel Study Course (MARS/HIST 3F51) that is being offered in the spring of 2024.

History Student Participates in World War Canadian Battlefield Tour

Bram Fookes (BA Honours, Hist ’23) visited the Canadian National Vimy Memorial this summer as a part of the Canadian Battlefields Tour from May 26 – June 12, 2023.

Bram Fookes (BA Honours with First Class Standing, History ’23) recently returned from participating in the Canadian Battlefields Foundation Battlefields tour. In a highly competitive process, the Canadian Battlefields Foundation awards annual bursary funding to university students from across Canada to tour the Western Front battle and memorial sites, from the Netherlands, Belgium, France, and Germany.

Congratulations, Bram, on this major accomplishment!

Best of luck as you pursue your MA in History at the University of Guelph this fall.

Professor Manitowabi Organizes First Nations Treaties Conference on Manitoulin Island

Professor Josh Manitowabi, along with colleagues from Robinson Huron Waawwiindmaagewin (Sam Manitowabi) and the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (Dr. Darrel Manitowabi), organized a Manitoulin Island Treaties (1836,1862) gathering on May 22-23, 2023. The two day gathering featured a program of ceremonial events, speeches, and Wampum teachings on the Treaty signing site in Manitowaning, and an academically-oriented series of presentations, talks, and reflections at the Ojibwe Cultural Foundation in M’Chigeeng.
