The History MA Program offers a range of degree streams designed to meet students’ varying needs and interests. Within each option, we offer considerable flexibility in designing research projects and meeting degree requirements.

History MA Streams
MA with Thesis
- 6 terms (24 months)
- Students take Historiography (HIST 5P01), Research Methods (HIST 5P02), and The History Seminar (HIST 5P03 and HIST 5P04)
- Each student enrols in the MA Thesis course (HIST 5F90) and writes an 80-100 page thesis that is defended at a public oral examination
MA with Major Research Paper (MRP)
- 3 terms (12 months)
- Students take Historiography (HIST 5P01), Research Methods (HIST 5P02), The History Seminar (HIST 5P03 or HIST 5P04), and 2 additional variable-topics half-course seminars
- Each student enrols in the Major Research Paper course (HIST 5F80) and writes an approximately 35-page paper representing original historical research
MA with Co-op
- 5 terms (20 months)
- Students complete the regular MRP-stream academic work, plus:
- 2 Co-op work terms (Terms 3 and 4; HIST 5N01 and HIST 5N02)
- Co-op Professional Preparation Course (HIST 5N90)
