The co-editors of The General earn course credit through an exciting experiential learning opportunity, HIST 4P70: Seminar in Academic Editing and Publishing.
Each Fall term, the History Department invites 4th-year Honours History students to apply for one of two positions as co-editors. With guidance from the Department’s Faculty-Student Liaison, the co-editors manage the publishing and production process, from soliciting submissions from student authors, to recruiting student peer reviewers, to editing manuscripts, to working with Brock Printing Services to turn out the final product.
The co-editors earn a 4th-year History half-credit for the course, completed in the Winter term. Grades are based on fulfillment of course requirements, which include:
- Organizing an editorial committee for the journal
- Soliciting submissions from Brock History undergraduates
- Assessing the suitability of submissions for publication
- Establishing peer-review guidelines and editorial protocols
- Editing and publishing the final edition
To apply for HIST 4P70, applicants must submit a letter outlining their qualifications and how they will promote undergraduate writing and publishing at Brock.
Successful applicants are selected by the History Department Chair and the Department’s Faculty-Student Liaison, and the Liaison serves as the HIST 4P70 instructor.
