  • Writing sample (10-20 pages), e.g., your best essay or research paper from an upper-level course, a journal article, or your thesis (single-authored only)

Tips for writing a strong letter of intent

Include the following:

  • Details about your education, work, and/or volunteer experiences that have helped you prepare for graduate studies
  • Past academic achievements
  • A research question or range of questions that you would like to pursue in your studies. This should include details about the time and place you would like to study
  • Specific reasons why Brock’s Department of History is a good fit for your research
  • The name of one or more potential supervisors for your project
  • Anything else you think is relevant to your application and possible future studies at Brock
  • Note: We understand that you have a passion for history. You do not need to write much (or even anything) about this passion. Instead, please provide the information listed above.
