Robert S.K. Welch Hall Addition

This project is an addition of approximately 20,000 sf for the Faculty of Education spread over four floors at the south end of Robert S.K. Welch Hall originally constructed in 1970.

There will be 2 Faculty Meeting Rooms, a TA Office, Graduate Student Computer Lab and associated facilities and 62 Faculty Offices arranged around an interconnected atrium with natural clerestorey lighting. A student lounge area will be located at the lowest level and study spaces will be found beneath the atrium, at three balconies projecting into the atrium, and in small windowed spaces distributed around the building.

The south end will have a heated ramp leading down to a garden patio and new entrance alongside the Student Lounge that will offer users access to the elevator in the existing building without having to climb the stairs in the entrance foyer or enter the building at the north end. The lower levels will have both clear and fritted glazing. The upper levels will be clad in zinc which will weather over a period of approximately 5 years from blue-grey to a darker slate grey. Occupancy is scheduled for December 2009. Diamond & Schmitt Architects and Merit Contractors Niagara are leading the design and construction work.
