Call for Papers: Ontario History special issue, “Welland Canals” (deadline: Jan. 31, 2028)

Ontario History, the journal of the Ontario Historical Society, is planning a special theme issue on the Welland Canals, with publication expected by Fall 2029. Dr. Michelle Vosburgh, a long-time sessional instructor in Brock’s Department of History, will serve as guest editor.

Interested in submitting a paper proposal? Send in your abstract by January 31, 2028.

30 November 2029 will mark the 200th anniversary of the passage of the first ships through the Welland Canal, bypassing Niagara Falls, and connecting Lake Erie and Lake Ontario for shipping. Since then, the canal has gone through several iterations, and has had an enormous impact on the local, national, and continental history.

Ontario History encourages scholars, graduate students, community workers, policy-advisers, instructors and museum/site curators (etc.) from any disciplinary background to submit an abstract or proposal.

As a historical journal, Ontario History will feature work that is historicized. Historiographical reviews, archival notes and fully-contextualized photo essays are also welcome. All submissions will be anonymized and assessed by two anonymous reviewers before publication.
