What to expect

Counselling is a conversation with a purpose

Counsellors try to understand your difficulties so that they can help you help yourself by:

  • Putting things into perspective;
  • Getting you to try new things to improve your situation;
  • Getting commitment from you to work at implementing new coping strategies;
  • Challenging yourself to grow and learn new ways of improving your life.

Personal Counselling Services provides short-term counselling/therapy. The duration and frequency of your support are determined collaboratively between you and your counselor, based on your goals, progress, and personal needs, while also guided by your counselor’s clinical judgment to ensure the most appropriate care.

If you chose telephone counselling, please ensure your phone settings allow incoming calls from blocked callers prior to your appointment. Your counsellor will call the phone number you provided at your scheduled appointment time from a blocked caller ID.

If you chose MS Teams counselling, you will receive an MS Teams meeting link in your email. Once you accept the meeting, it will appear in your Teams calendar. At your scheduled time, log into Teams and join the meeting from your calendar OR in the meeting invitation link in your email.

You should complete the consent/intake forms before your session. They will be provided to you.

Off Campus Referrals

When off-campus therapy is recommended or preferred by a student, Personal Counselling Services can support the student through the process of getting connected.

We will help to identify several referral options specific to a student’s personal situation. Local counselling options may include providers who offer virtual appointments, have experience working with university students and some that provide low or sliding scale fees.

Teaching Site

We are also a teaching site and have graduate students from other universities completing their clinical placements for their Master of Counselling Psychology or Master of Social Work programs. Our interns are available to provide counselling support services to Brock students and adhere to the same privacy regulations as our Personal Counselling staff.
