A few points need to be made about dealing with work missed due to illness.
- When a student is very ill there is no problem rescheduling a test for them or extending the due date on an assignment. However, having a cold is not considered to be very ill. The student must have a legitimate illness which prevents them from doing work or getting to the university to write their test.
- In order for the student to be permitted to write the test or submit the assignment at a later date a doctor’s note MUST be filled out properly on the department’s medical form (Link to https://www.cosc.brocku.ca/forms/medical). Please take note of the department’s rules that are outlined on the document. If this form is not properly completed in full the form may be not accepted.
- In the case of missing a scheduled lab the student is responsible for notifying the course instructor (via email, phone, etc. ) as soon as possible, that they are going to miss their scheduled lab. It is at this point that arrangements can be made to attend another lab later that week or arrange to complete the lab when the student returns to school.
- In the case of missing a test there are a few more considerations to be made. As well as following rules as outlined on the department’s medical form, it is the student’s responsibility to notify the course instructor (via email, phone, etc.) as soon as possible, that they are going to miss the test. The student should also explain the reason for missing the test as well as when they expect to be returning to school.
Note: The instructor does reserve the right to deem the reason for missing the work unacceptable and therefore, missing work would result in a mark of zero. It is for this reason that it is very important that you either speak to the course instructor prior to the situation to ensure that your reason for missing the work will be accepted.
