Genital Herpes

Genital herpes is an STD caused by herpes simplex virus (HSV). There are 2 types, I and II that affect the genital area.

Symptoms

  • Genital herpes causes painful sores on and around the genitals.
  • Members of the same virus family can cause fever blisters or cold sores on the mout
  • First Episode is usually the most severe and may also include fever, headache, generalized aching, swollen glands, sore throat, problems urinating.
  • A tingling or itching in the genital area, may be experienced a few days after sex. Blisters soon appear. The blisters burst and leave painful sores which can last from two to four weeks. There is no way to predict how frequent or severe recurrences may occur.
Diagnosis
  • Cultures can be done while sores are present to try to determine if these are due to herpes.
Treatment
  • See a Doctor for treatment. At present there is no cure.
Prevention
  • Condoms may provide some protection but do not always cover or come between infected and vulnerable skin surfaces.
  • If you touch herpes sores, wash your hands with soap and water to avoid spreading the diseas
Other
  • It is possible to pass the virus on to your sex partners when symptoms are not present.
  • Oral sex can spread the virus.
  • Inform partners of any previous history of herpes.
