The Office of the Provost is hosting an information session regarding our UArctic membership. Please join us on Friday, October 9 at 9am in the Pond Inlet. Joining us will be Professor Patrick Maher from Nipissing University. Professor Maher has been active in the University of the Arctic (UArctic) for more than 20 years. First as a course developer, and then founder of the UArctic Thematic Network (TN) on Northern Tourism. Professor Maher has led this TN since 2012, and developed a comprehensive graduate program that brings together Masters students across five countries/seven institutions.
Professor Maher has served as the UArctic Assembly representative for three different Canadian universities, and in 2013 was seconded into the role of Associate Dean (and Acting Dean) for the UArctic Bachelor of Circumpolar Studies. He is currently a UArctic x Lloyd’s Register Foundation Research Fellow (2024-2026).
Through the UArctic collaboration, Professor Maher has been successful with international funding applications to Global Affairs Canada, the Norwegian Research Council, the Nordic Council of Ministers/Nordregio, SSHRC, the Danish Agency of Science and Higher Education, and others.
The morning will be divided into two sessions:
Lessons learned through two decades of networking within the University of the Arctic.
This session will build on Professor Maher’s activity within the UArctic since 2005. Starting this initial contact and then moving along to build relationships with colleagues across the circumpolar north. Finally, he will look at how those research/teaching relationships become true “professional friendships” that last through retirements, global pandemics, and even deaths.
Leveraging UArctic networks to create international research opportunities.
Funding success for research doesn’t just automatically happen. These days, international contacts and evidence of ongoing collaboration are crucial. The UArctic (and its networks) can support this, and Professor Maher will share the story of how he’s managed to build the relationships needed in this ever-more-competitive research environment.
