  • Brock prof internationally recognized for Canadian Studies contributions

    Brock University French Professor Jane Koustas has been honoured with the 2022 Governor General’s International Award for Canadian Studies.  Professor Koustas is also a long-term member for the Faculty Advisory Committee for Canadian Studies (FACCS).

    Presented annually by the International Council for Canadian Studies (ICCS), the award recognizes scholars who have made outstanding contributions to the scholarship and development of the field internationally.

    Congratulations Jane from your colleagues in the Centre for Canadian Studies at Brock.

    Please join us for a very special event. 

    A virtual conversation with filmmaker Courtney Montour

    Tuesday, March 22, 2022, 7-8 p.m.

    Montour will discuss her award-winning documentary film Mary Two-Axe Earley: I Am Indian Again (National Film Board of Canada, 2021, 34 min.).

    The film shares the powerful story of Mary Two-Axe Earley, who fought for more than two decades to challenge sex discrimination against First Nations women embedded in Canada’s Indian Act and became a key figure in Canada’s women’s rights movement.

    The film will be made available to registrants in advance.

    About the filmmaker: Courtney Montour (Kanien’kehá:ka [Mohawk]) works in documentary film and digital media exploring issues of Indigenous identity. Her work includes the documentaries Sex Spirit Strength (2016) and Flat Rocks (2017) and episodes of the documentary series Mohawk Ironworkers (2016) and Skindigenous (2021). She co-created and coordinated McGill University’s Indigenous Field Studies course, held in Kahnawake, for eight years.

    On March 8, 2022, the Centre for Canadian Studies hosted an expert panel The Russian Invasion of Ukraine – Canadian Perspectives featuring Irene Schumylo-Newton, President of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress-Niagara Branch; Stefan Dolgert, Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science; and Gregor Kranjc, Associate Professor in the Department of History.

    One of the most frequently asked questions was how Canadians can help the people of Ukraine.  Irene suggested donating to the Canada-Ukraine Foundation to get the help where it is needed most.  Please click here if you would like to donate.
