Executive Leadership in the Social-Profit Sector

Executive leadership in the social-profit sector is different. Executive development should be too.

Leading a social-profit organization means navigating realities few traditional leadership models were designed to address. Mission and sustainability. Compassion and difficult decisions. Innovation and accountability. Community expectations and organizational capacity.

The Executive Leadership in the Social-Profit Sector program is built specifically for that reality. Grounded in original Canadian research conducted by Lake and Associates Canada and designed for current and emerging executive leaders, this applied learning experience combines sector specific leadership development, peer dialogue and real organizational challenges to help you lead with greater intention while strengthening the organization, mission and communities you serve.

The Executive Leadership in the Social-Profit Sector program responds to a longstanding need for executive development designed specifically for leaders in mission driven organizations. This 10-session applied learning experience strengthens the capabilities needed to navigate the competing demands of social-profit leadership with greater intention and effectiveness.

Through the Performance Pendulum™ framework, participants develop practical approaches to influencing stakeholders, navigating governance and accountability, fostering innovation, leading with compassion, strengthening strategic and operational decision making, and building relationships that advance organizational and community priorities.

Participants will connect these capabilities to the realities of their own organizations in each session, drawing on relevant scenarios, practical application, facilitated discussion, peer perspectives and reflection to test different approaches and strengthen their leadership practice. The experience culminates in an integrated application of the framework and a personalized action plan for continued leadership development.

Your Learning Journey

The experience begins with you: your leadership context, current strengths and opportunities for continued growth. We will draw on the research and sector specific framework behind the program to establish a personal baseline for your leadership journey ahead. Across the following sessions, you will work through eight leadership requirements and their related competencies, connecting them to the decisions, relationships, responsibilities and competing priorities you navigate as an executive.

Through practical application, peer perspectives and facilitated dialogue, you will strengthen how you approach real leadership challenges and consider where different situations call for different leadership responses. The journey concludes by bringing insights from across the program into your own leadership practice, with clear priorities and a personalized action plan for continued development.

Extend Your Leadership Development

To deepen and sustain development beyond the taught program, participants are highly encouraged to continue their journey through the Performance Pendulum Questionnaire™ (PPQ) 360° assessment and four individual executive coaching sessions. This optional experience brings together external feedback and insights from the program to inform a data driven individual development plan and support continued growth in leadership practice.

Executive Certificate

Participants who successfully complete the program requirements will receive an Executive Certificate from the Goodman School of Business, recognizing their commitment to continued executive leadership development in the social-profit sector.

The certificate reflects completion of a rigorous, sector specific development experience focused on strengthening leadership practice and applying learning within the realities of executives in the social-profit organizations.
