The NextGen Municipal Leadership program, one of four programs offered by Goodman Group in the Fall 2023, recently marked the graduation of its 18th cohort. 21 participants from the City of Welland, Regional Municipality of Niagara, City of Port Colborne, Town of Pelham, Town of Lincoln, City of Niagara Falls, and the Town of Grimsby participated in this 10-week course that was effectively delivered in a hybrid format to make it easier for everyone to join in. Lindsay Richardson, from the Town of Pelham, stated that “the fact that the hybrid option was available to all of us was such a benefit. Having the hybrid experience allowed us to participate fully.  It was a really positive experience.”  Henry Boese from the Town of Pelham stressed how crucial professional development is for municipal leaders and the value of the program.

The program has been designed to help municipal leaders understand their strengths, weaknesses, and personal styles while learning how to motivate their teams to consistently perform at their best. Participants delved into reinvigorating the mission, vision, and goals of their respective organizations or departments, mastering how to effectively execute these proposed objectives.   Part of the program involved reflecting into the complex network of relationships within municipal environments and understanding their importance. The program also covered the topic of EDI in the workplace, as well as managing challenges within long-term union environments, change management and much more.  The program offered the perfect balance between newly acquired knowledge and opportunities to network, discuss and reflect.

This successful program owes its achievements to the ongoing support from the Advisory Committee, local municipalities, and the commitment of both Brock University’s faculty and industry leaders serving as instructors. With this cohort’s conclusion, Goodman Group looks forward to the positive contributions these graduates will make within their municipalities.  Congratulations to all the graduates!
