  Join us for a screening of Fire Song (2015), featuring panel speaker Teddy Strette (Anishinaabe). Fire Song is Canadian drama film, written and directed by Adam Garnet Jones. The film stars Andrew Martin as Shane, a bisexual aboriginal teenager. When his sister, Destiny, commits suicide just weeks before he is scheduled to leave his community to attend university, he is forced to wrestle with the decision of whether to follow his dreams or stay home to help support his family.

  Join us for “BIPOC Perspectives: Feminism and Gender Violence,” a workshop hosted by the Student Justice Centre and facilitated by Women’s and Gender Studies faculty Lyn Trudeau and Margot Francis.

  Feminism and the interconnectedness of gender-based violence are prevalent themes today. In this workshop, we will discuss what feminism is, the different types of feminism, and how gender-based violence plays a role in almost every “feminist topic.”

  Lyn Trudeau is from Sagamok Anishinawbek First Nation, Eagle Clan. Lyn’s research is through a decolonial lens and has included: working alongside Elders, Indigenous youth, Indigenous teacher candidates, and residential schools.

  Margot Francis‘s teaching interests are in the areas of Indigenous resurgence through artistic and community mobilization; feminist, decolonial and anti-racist activism challenging sexual/racial violence; and queer and intersectional approaches to sexualities.

  A Virtual Conversation with Filmmaker Courtney Montour

  Courtney Montour (Kanien’kehá:ka [Mohawk]) works in documentary film and digital media exploring issues of Indigenous identity. Her work includes the documentaries Sex Spirit Strength (2016) and Flat Rocks (2017) and episodes of the documentary series Mohawk Ironworkers (2016) and Skindigenous (2021). She co-created and coordinated McGill University’s Indigenous Field Studies course, held in Kahnawake, for eight years.

  Montour will discuss her award-winning documentary film Mary Two-Axe Earley: I Am Indian Again (National Film Board of Canada, 2021, 34 min.). The film shares the powerful story of Mary Two-Axe Earley, who fought for more than two decades to challenge sex discrimination against First Nations women embedded in Canada’s Indian Act and became a key figure in Canada’s women’s rights movement.
