  • Music@Noon returns for the 2018 season!

    Trumpeter Timothy White, and pianist Lesley Kingham perform on Tuesday Jan. 23 at noon in the Cairns Recital Hall. 

    The RBC Foundation Music@Noon Recital Series returns for the 2018 winter semester on Tuesday, Jan. 23 at noon, with a concert featuring Brock instructors organist Lesley Kingham and trumpeter Timothy White.

    Kingham is a professional accompanist with a number of appointments around the Niagara region. These include accompanying professional soloists, the Brock Choirs, Avanti Chamber Singers, and numerous Brock instrumental and vocal students.

    White has played in the Hamilton Philharmonic, Symphony Nova Scotia, and the Niagara Symphony. He also performs throughout southern Ontario as a soloist, freelance trumpeter, and clinician, and with his quintet, the Rondeau Brass.

    This series continues Tuesdays at noon during the academic year in the Cairns Recital Hall of the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre. Keep updated with this semester’s Music@Noon dates through ExperienceBU.

  • Final Music-at-Noon concert for 2017

    Tuesday Dec. 5 will be the last RBC Foundation Music@Noon Recital for 2017.

    This concert will feature Brock’s piano and guitar students as they wrap up 2017 with the first half of the RBC Foundation Music@Noon Recital Series.

    But don’t worry, this series of performances isn’t going away for good! There will be many more performances to come in the new year, taking place at noon in the Cairns Recital Hall of the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre.

    Encore! Professional Concert Series presents: The Walker Quartet with Karin Di Bella, and Guitar Extravaganza III

    This weekend the Department of Music is presenting two spectacular concerts that will surely be among the highlights of the fall season.

    On Friday Nov. 10, as part of the Walker Cultural Leader Series, Encore! Professional Concert Series presents: The Walker Quartet with faculty pianist Karin Di Bella. The Walker Cultural Leader Series was generously founded by Marilyn I. Walker.

    Now in its second season, the Department of Music’s resident Walker String Quartet and Karin Di Bella present a program of two of the most iconic works in the string quintet repertoire, the Piano Quintets by Schumann in E-flat Major and Shostakovich in G Minor.

    This concert takes place on Friday Nov. 10, 2017 in the Partridge Concert Hall at the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre, starting at 7:30 pm. For more information, please visit the Department concert events webpage and the ExperienceBU page.

    Then on Saturday Nov. 11 as part of our continuing celebration of Canada’s 150 year of Confederation, the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre is once again the venue for the ever-popular Guitar Extravangaza III including a special Canada 150 performance of Carpe Noctem.

    Brock University’s annual celebration of the guitar commences at 7:30 pm on Saturday Nov. 11 in the Cairns Recital Hall.  An orchestra of 60 guitars comprised of Brock students, local amateurs and professionals will be directed by Brock University Guitar Instructor, Timothy Phelan. Special guest soloists include Matthew McAllister (Scotland) and Emma Rush (Canada).  The concert features a tribute to the late Warren Stirtzinger with George Kane (USA) and James Bryan McCollum (Canada), music composed by Timothy Phelan and the World Premiere of Carpe Noctem – a six-movement work written especially for this occasion by Niagara composer Floyd Turner.  For more information, please visit the Department concert events webpage and the ExperienceBU page.

  • Guitar Extravaganza draws packed house

    It was a full house at the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre for Guitar Extravaganza II Saturday night. Fifty guitarists, including Brock University music students, alumni and faculty, as well as guitarists from Hamilton and Niagara region, joined together to celebrate the instrument. The evening featured solo and duet performances and concluded with the musicians coming together as The Mighty Niagara Guitar Orchestra to perform a special piece. Composed and conducted by Brock instructor Timothy Phelan, Fantasia para una dama was performed with renowned Canadian guitar virtuoso Emma Rush for the first time in North America.

    This is the second year for the Guitar Extravaganza. The event was organized by Brock University Department of Music, with support from the Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts.

  • The Brock University Wind Ensemble presents “Full Steam Ahead” on stage at the Cairns Recital Hall, FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre

    Whether you’re a jazz aficionado or a connoisseur of the classics, the Brock University Wind Ensemble is sure to strike a chord.  Full Steam Ahead will be the ensemble’s inaugural performance held in the Cairns Recital Hall at the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre on Tuesday, December 8, 2015 at 7:30 p.m.

    Under the baton of conductor Zoltan Kalman, the University Wind Ensemble features the talents of 60 musicians drawn from Brock University, high school students within the Niagara Region, and the broader music community. This concert includes Janice Fralick from the Niagara Symphony; Mary Sobota and Joanne Romanow from the Burlington Concert Band; and Kelly Hindrichs, Peter Macdonald, Frances Cohen, Mary-Anne Pearson, David Pearson, and Graham Young from Hamilton’s Symphony on the Bay.

    High school students from the Niagara Region showcased in this performance include: Lindsey Cook from E. L. Crossley SS (Pelham); and Makayla Todd and Todd Morgan from Laura Secord SS (St. Catharines).

    The Wind Ensemble’s program features masterworks of the past and present, including “La Gioconda” by Amilcare Ponchielli; “Selections from Porgy and Bess” by George Gershwin; “Children of Sanchez” by Chuck Mangione; “Orient Express” by Philip Sparke; “The Lord of the Rings” by Johan de Meij; “The Christmas Song” by Mel Tormé; “Christmas on Broadway” by John Higgins; “Lost in the Woods” by Department of Music alumus Chris Barletta; and “West Side Story” by Leonard Bernstein.

    Kalman states: “The players and I are incredibly excited about our inaugural performance in the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre! In celebration of our new performance home I have programmed a repertoire like none other in the history of the Wind Ensemble. It will feature a stimulating and grandiose mix of different musical styles that will definitely leave our audience breathless, will demonstrate the exceptional talent and brilliance of this group, and will allow us to soar to new heights.”

    Such performances from the Department of Music are a key part of the Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts’ mandate in building connections between the community and the breadth of talent and creativity at Brock University.
