  • National Doughnut Day Contest

    They’re delicious, sold on almost every street corner and considered a symbol of national identity. In recognition of National Doughnut Day, we’re giving away one $50 gift card to Beechwood Doughnuts in St. Catharines.

    Niagara’s first and only 100% vegan doughnut shop, Beechwood is located in the heart of downtown St. Catharines. Since opening in January of 2015, they have rapidly increased in popularity and become a destination for local residents. The co-owner of the shop, Tayler Book (BA ’14), is also a proud Brock Alumna.

  • Canadian Institute in Greece Schaus Internship Bursary

    Experience the ancient ruins of Greece dating back thousands of years.

    Brock University Undergraduate students interested in ancient art and archaeology, or classical languages and civilizations are encouraged to apply for the Schaus Internship Bursary (valued at $2,000 CAD).

    The selected student will carry out a three-month internship at the Canadian Institute in Greece (CIG) located in Athens during the 2019-2020 academic year. While there, the student’s main responsibility will be to archive work in the CIG library but the internship also includes free access to archaeological sites and museums, reading rights to Greek and foreign libraries in Athens, and discounted accommodation at the CIG hostel.

    Responsibilities:

    • 25 hours / week
      • Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. plus 5-hours of flexibility

  • International Centre Global Commons Student Mural

    Background:

    On a daily basis, the International Centre Global Commons is used regularly by nearly 300 ESL students from around the world as a lounge, lunch room, and study space. The space is also a hub for Brock International events and activities, welcoming the entire Brock community to the International Centre each week. Events in the space can range from PowerPoint presentations, to live sporting events such as the World Cup, movie nights and social gatherings.

    Brock new Strategic Plan highlights the importance of internationalization and globalization in Universities’ reputation. International students, international exchanges of students and faculty, international research and creative partnerships facilitate a university having direct engagement at the global level

    Project outline:

    • Creating an artistic mural for the International Centre Global Commons to replace the Canada 150 Wall (pictured above)
    • Dimensions: 187 inches wide by 115 inches tall
    • Medium: Open to different formats
    • Artist may choose to produce scaled down version that could be scanned in, enhanced, and printed as a vinyl wall graphic

    Audience:

    • The entire Brock community comprising faculty, staff, and students from more than 100 countries around the world
    • More directly, nearly 300 ESL students from around the world (per-dominantly China, Japan, Korea)

    Communication objectives:

    • How does the mural reflect equality, Brock’s diverse international community and incorporate Canadian culture?
    • How does the mural enhance the student experience and reflect the day-to-day use of the space?
    • How does the mural reflect the importance of internationalization, globalization (as mentioned in Brock’s Strategic plan)

    Creative considerations:

    • Several examples of diverse/cultural murals are provided below
    • Designs that create ‘Instagrammable’ moments, and encourage students to take photos in front of the wall will be strongly considered

    Creative mandatories:

    • Design must feel inclusive to more than 100 countries represented on campus
    • No use of multiple languages (ex. ‘Welcome’ graphic in multiple languages found in the Ian Beddis Gym or at the entrance of Sean O’Sullivan Theatre)

    Timeline for completion:

    • April 23: RRP is published
    • May 17: RFP closes
    • May 29: Committee meets to review
    • June 3 Winner announced
    • June 10: Artists provides final design based on committee feedback
    • June 17: Production begins
    • July 6: Production ends

    Compensation:

    • The selected artist will be awarded $1,000 for completing the project
    • Brock International will cover the cost of supplies & installation
    • Student must provide approx. cost of supplies needed to execute the mural

    • Up to 5 years

  • King Ubu – Theatrical Play Contest

    Brock International has teamed up with Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts to give you a chance to win one of two FREE pair of tickets to the play King Ubu.     Alfred Jarry’s controversial classic King Ubu will bring audiences face-to-face with the absurdity of modern life at Brock University’s Marilyn I. Walker Theatre. Presented by Brock’s Department of Dramatic Arts (DART), the show is an avant-garde and hilarious commentary on human folly and the dangers of unchecked political ambition.

    The production showcases the talents of students in the DART undergraduate program, including Ash McEachern, Avery Delaney, Chris Murillo, Emma McCormick, Jackson Wagner, Jasmine Case, Juan-Carlos Figueroa, Lauren Reid, Leah Eichler, Rachel Frederick, Samuel Donovan, Taylor Bogaert and Tsipporah Shendroff.   • IRCC Youth Advisory Group (YAG)

    In Spring 2019, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will launch a new Youth Advisory Group (YAG) to bring together a select group of students between the ages of 16 and 24 from across Canada to serve as a forum for engagement between youth and policy-makers on cross-cutting issues with respect to immigration, settlement and integration, citizenship, refugee affairs, and international issues.

    Benefits to participating:

    Beyond helping to ensure that student perspectives are considered in IRCC policy and programming, by participating on the YAG students will have the opportunity to:

    • Actively participate in discussions, activities, and brainstorming exercises.
    • Learn more about the federal government, including the policy process and cross-cutting immigration-related topics.
    • Develop their communication, analytical, and leadership skills.

    Application details:

    IRCC is inviting Brock University to nominate a maximum of two students from our community to apply to the YAG.To apply, please submit a 1 page (max) statement of interest explaining why you are interested and why you would be a good candidate to isa@brocku.ca The deadline to apply is Wednesday, November 7th, 2018 at midnight.

    Students interested in applying, must confirm the following:

    • Currently live in Canada and be between the ages of 16 and 24 on November 19, 2018 (i.e., the date of the application deadline).
    • Nominees may self-identify as an immigrant, newcomer, refugee, naturalized citizen, or Canadian youth. Nominees do not need to have gone through the immigration system themselves, but should have direct experience with newcomers (e.g., mentoring a newcomer youth or providing services for youth).
    • Nominees should be students with leadership capacity who make positive change in their community, and who have an interest in engaging on policy and programming and learning more about the federal policy process.

    Nominees should also be aware of and comfortable with the roles and responsibilities of serving as a YAG member. In particular, nominees should be aware that:

    • Successful applicants will be invited to join the YAG for a two-year term.
    • The YAG will meet three to four times per year (one in-person meeting per year in Ottawa and two to three virtual meetings). Members will be expected to participate consistently in meetings.
    • Members will not be paid for their participation, but IRCC will cover expenses associated with travelling to and staying in Ottawa for in-person meetings.

    The selection process:

    Top applicants will be selected for phone interviews, which will be used to finalize the selection process. Successful candidates will then be invited to join the YAG.

    In selecting YAG members, IRCC will consider the strength of applicants’ responses to the online application form and during the phone interviews. In addition, IRCC will strive to balance interests in the settlement and integration, immigration (including international topics and international students), citizenship, and refugee sectors. Age, gender, diversity, regional representation, and representation from francophone communities will also be considered in the composition of the group.

  • Exchange scholarship available at German institution

    Hochschule Koblenz University of Applied Health Science – RheinAhrCampus in Remagen, Germany, has a scholarship opportunity for Brock University students interested in an Exchange program. The University is a small 3,000-student campus on the Rhine river that was awarded world heritage status by UNESCO for its beautiful scenery and architecture.

  • My Brock Summer Instagram Contest

    Share your summer experience for a chance to win an iPad Mini 4!

    Students from more than 100 countries call Brock their home away from home. They come from all corners of the world and represent unique cultures and ways of life.

    To celebrate this diversity, we’re asking ALL Brock University students to share their summer experience by posting a photo on Instagram using the hashtag #MyBrockSummer2018. Photos can be as simple as everyday life, visiting friends, and family, a summer vacation, a trip to your former high school, or an experience abroad. Creativity is encouraged, but photos must feature a Brock University branded item (shirt, sweater, hat, memorabilia, logo etc.)

    The top five (5) photos will be selected by a panel of judges, and then put to a popular vote with the total number of likes received determining the top three (3) photos, and ultimately the winner of the contest.

    Prizes, awarded to the top three photos, are outlined below:

    • First prize:  iPad Mini 4 (M.S.R.P. $529)
    • Second prize: Assortment of Brock University swag (M.S.R.P $100)
