Currency Exchange

Canada uses the Canadian dollar (CAD). For many visitors, this means their money often goes further compared with currencies such as the US dollar (USD), euro (EUR), and British pound (GBP), although exchange rates fluctuate over time. While Canadian dollars are needed for some purchases, most businesses also accept major credit and debit cards. Because exchange rates change daily, it is advisable to check the current rate before travelling.

You can exchange money upon arrival at major international airports, including Toronto Pearson International Airport, where currency exchange services are available in the terminals.

When exchanging money, compare rates and fees between providers. Some exchange offices advertise “no commission” or “zero fees,” but it is still important to check the final exchange rate being offered. Banks are generally a safe option for currency exchange, although their rates may not always be the most favorable.

U.S. currency is widely accepted at many businesses throughout Canada, particularly in tourist destinations such as Niagara-on-the-Lake. However, acceptance of American cash is at the discretion of each business and cannot be guaranteed. When accepted, merchants typically apply their own exchange rate, which may differ from the current bank rate. Change is generally provided in Canadian dollars, and some businesses may only accept U.S. bills in larger denominations or for purchases above a minimum amount.
